"The medical breakthrough is controversial, as many worry about eugenics and designer babies for the wealthy." Damn, this is kind of a storyline on Star Trek.
From a non ethical point of view ,it should be done to the poor , targeting tertiary structure in CD4 will cause a substantially weaker immune system, targeting ccr5 will cause toxic accumulation, this needs constant contribution from at least 4 generations of mad scientist to be acceptable
This is stupid and a waste of money. The more mutations you artificially create, the more mutations will occur to those mutations, resulting in drug resistant bacteria and the like. It's weird China, the country with more greenhouse gas emissions than the next 3 largest countries combined, and the most populous country, can't see they should be focusing on enhancing the lives of it's actual citizens instead of engineering more failure.
I don't see China are focusing their resources on gene engineering. You have any data on that? Instead, China had doubled their 1.4 billion citizens‘ income in less than 10 years. I'd say they are very focused on enhancing the lives of their actual citizens.
At what cost? The health of all. Selling false promises to hundreds of millions by burning as much coal and toxins as possible. Work, work, work! Destroy, destroy, destroy!

upon further review, it appears that the researcher's intention was to create sufficient publicity for the benefits of the 6 to 7 bio-medical companies that he owns. chinese authorities have ordered an investigation into his claim https://www.pulse.ng/bi/tech/chines...tion-and-suspended-without-pay-id9141539.html
WuXi AppTec comes to mind. For each joint research done with McGill / Toronto with Chinese Universities, 1:15 Chinese counterparts and fully funded by them
Instead of exclamation marks, do you have any facts to back up your hatred rantings? Chinese life expectancy has been increased by 6 years since 2000. That is the health of all. And Trump knows coals the best.
I wwas watching Entertainment Tonight. Barbara Streisand has 2 clones of a favorite dog. I didn't know you could do that
Chinese Gov detains scientist who claims to have made gene-edited babies; He is under house arrest. After weeks of uncertainty surrounding He's whereabouts, the New York Times has learned that the government has placed the researcher under house arrest at a housing facility in the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. He can make calls and send emails, but he can't leave. Guards prevent people from getting close to either He's de facto residence or the offices involved in his research. The university has publicly denied reports of the detainment, but staff and He's business partner Liu Chaoyu confirmed his presence. He's fate remains unclear. There are still concerns about the honesty of the gene editing experiment, let alone its authenticity. The scientific community has accused He of giving patients a deceptive consent form (they were told it was an AIDS vaccine trial, not genetic modification). He had promised "raw data" for review, but that never came to pass. Right now, there's no way to verify the procedure or its long-term effectiveness. Even if the government hadn't already raised moral objections to He's claims, it would still have significant issues with his practices. https://www.engadget.com/2018/12/30/china-detains-scientist-behind-gene-edited-babies/
So, you think changing genes for, say, genetic diseases will cause drug resistant bacteria? Dude, really? Jesus...it sounds like you're just making crap up with that statement.
lol wut. This has nothing to do with bacteria but changing the site that HIV binds to cells. The problem with what he did wasn't using genetic editing to prevent disease, it was not getting proper consent from couples and then doing experiments on an embryo to test the ability to edit the germline - since it was actually unnecessary for preventing disease. That makes it wholly unethical.
