On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the gayest......how gay am I if I looked at this movie poster and thought, "I'll have to watch this movie because I like girl power, and those two chicks are cute."

And chalk me up as another lover of the 5th element. It's one of those movies that if I'm flipping channels, and it's on, I just have to watch. It's great. And The Professional is close to a masterpiece........though not the same genre. Deckard: have your read Naked Lunch? I was at the Pop culture museum in Seattle a few weeks back, and I took a picture of Deckard's police car hanging from the ceiling for you, but I haven't gotten off my butt and posted it.

What did you think of Looper?

Here is a great scene from the Bruce Willis classic Color of Night.

Probably not. It's been a bust at the box office, and the cheaper theaters I go to (for movies I want to see but might suck) have this showing only twice a day.

Saw it. The plot is straight forward. The two leads have no chemistry. And the two leads need to be better actors to carry the meh plot.

Fifth Element had a better plot and had Bruce Willis to carry the movie.

This is why I asked the question in the other thread comparing this to Jupiter Ascending.

The moment I saw the Valerian trailer with those leads, I figured it was a bust.

Out of those Besson films I still liked Leon the Professional the best.

Wasn't even close to a Sci Fi film.

Haven't seen it but the commercials look like someone had uncontrollable diarrhea of CGI.

The Bad actors and acting seems to be a recurring theme on the criticism of the movie
I figured it would have amazing visuals but theat is not enough
I love Avatar's visuals but the story was ****.

I think the best word to sum it up is soulless. Sadly that happens far too much with movies very reliant on CG. The best parts of the film were the first few scenes. And unfortunately the best emotion came from a CG race of beings in the beginning. The effects of course were incredible and I appreciate the attempt at world building and there were some creative elements here and there. But overall it just fell flat. The trailers are misleading and the story is nothing like the previews make it seem; it's pretty straightforward but would have been more enjoyable if perhaps Besson went simpler and smaller scale (and expanded the world in sequels if it did well). Cara Delivingne was ok and would have been better if she had a better male lead. Dane DeHaan was awful; I was really annoyed by his voice. Neither were particular believable as elite soldiers and officers. And it's not that their chemistry was non-existent, but more that their romance was completely unearned, from the very beginning. In fact most of the poignant moments are unearned. People need to stop casting Rihanna too.

I don't fault Besson for trying though; I wish studios would take more risks. But he probably should have kept it a bit smaller scale in this first movie and not throw the whole kitchen sink at us. Fifth Element, which they are obvious comparisons too (Valerian was the film he wanted to make when he made the former) is the far better movie. I'd consider it a classic, not in the same vein as more thought-provoking sci-fi of course; it's just a fun, fun movie.

What's interesting though is that many heavy CG movies like Valerian or Warcraft do horribly at the box office, from the get-go. Yet Cameron and his movies like Avatar just explode. You can say whatever you want about his lack of originality in his storytelling but he has a knack for making films that connect with audiences and selling it beforehand.

Still on my list of flicks to see. I'm a huge fan of The 5th Element, one of Bruce's best acting jobs, in my opinion. Fingers crossed that I'll like it.
