NYCC: First Official Poster For VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS Revealed

Valerian stars Dane DeHaan, John Goodman, Cara Delevingne, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Rutger Hauer and Rihanna, and is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2017.

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

When footage from Luc Besson's Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets screened a few months back at SDCC, it was met with a standing ovation - so fans have been looking forward to the first officially released teaser trailer, which should debut this weekend during New York Comic-Con.

In anticipation of that, EuropaCorp has released the first poster for the sci-fi flick, along with three new images featuring the main cast members (Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne) and a trio of alien characters known as the Doghan Daguis.

I'm in on this--one hundo, thank god Sci-Fi is starting to creep back in on the large and small screen. Surely we've had our fill of rehashed comic book movies, right?

This is a rehashed comic book movie, from a French comic book series called Valérian et Laureline.

I can't ****ing wait. Kudos coming your way, OP! Uh, I forgot. I like your find! This director helmed one of the ten best science fiction films of all time, in my humble opinion (actually, I should freakin' know), The 5th Element. Take nothing this man creates for granted. Besson is capable of greatness. Until he proves otherwise, I'm going to assume that this will be one of the great SF films of the year.

Should be an interesting watch if it's more like 5th Element and less like Lucy.

Luc Besson + sci fi? On the coattails of the Fifth Element I will take a chance on this combination every time.

Umm.. you guys DO remember Carla's magnificent turn as 'Enchantress' in Suicide Squad, right? It was, to put it bluntly, gawd-awful.

And apparently she is a major character in this thing as well.

It could be one of the greatest movies of all time, but bad casting can drag it down.. WAY down.. just ask Highlander and Watchmen.

I don't know who that chick was in highlander, I am guessing she must have been the director's sister-in-law or something, because as far as I know, she hasn't been in anything else. And that WAS great, but it would have been even BETTER if they had found a decent female lead instead of who they ended up with. Ok in fairness, I looked her up, and she has been employed as a working TV actress for most of her life. Great. It was still horrible casting for that role.

And Watchmen? All I can say is, Malin Akerman must be really great at giving... you-know-what. Because she sucks at the acting thing.

And good ol' Carla? Maybe some people are hot for unibrows, I don't know. I remember seeing movie previews for something called 'Paper Towns', and this guy was supposed to be obsessed with this great beauty who lived next door to him or something.. and it was her. And all I could think of was, THAT is who this kid is obsessed with? She's not even hot, and oh my there's a unibrow too. Well, maybe she can at least act.

Never saw Paper Towns, but have watched Suicide Squad a few times, and the answer to the question 'Can she act?' is an emphatic 'No!' .. or at least 'Not very well.'

Now, maybe David Ayer just couldn't get a good performance out of her, and maybe Besson can. But after 'Lucy', I am not exactly quaking with excitement.

Hopefully this new Valerian movie will be great, I love science fiction. But I am going into this thing with eyes wide open and expectations tempered.

A cartoon series was made based on this. The English dub was titled, Time Jam: Valerian & Laureline. Kids who liked the new Voltron would enjoy this series too.

i want to have high hopes, but i don't. Besson's recent stuff has been quite poor. I also just miss the days of well made sets and body suits (like 5th element). When lots of effort, creativity is put into those things i notice. I don't get the same feelings when i watch expensive CGI stuff.

Yep. Because it looks like a damn video game cut scene. I think the last film that I watched that had that old school movie making feel was Crimson Peak. Gorgeous sets, beautiful costumes and good use of practical effects.
