    DVauthrin,

You say you "like most anything", but I somehow doubt I'll ever see you (not that I would be there) at a Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, Hanson, Randy Travis, Immature, etc concert.

Me, I like Classic Rock the best. I also like 70s funk. 80s music has a soft spot with me, because those were my formative years, but there's lot's from the 70s & 80s that I still hate.

    Favorite Bands

Classic Rock: Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, The Doors, Steppenwolf, The Beatles, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Creedance Clearwater Revival, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc...

80s: The Police, Metallica, Guns 'n Roses, Lionel Richie, Mr. Mister, Motley Crue, Duran Duran, Whitesnake, Micheal Jackson, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Skid Row, Sade, George Michael, Prince, NWA, Run DMC, etc...

Newer (slightly): Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tony Braxton, Pearl Jam, etc...

My favorite album of all time is Guns 'n Roses' "Appetite for Destruction". I can listen to that one album over and over and over again without getting sick of it. I think no other album is better (may be equal but not better) from the 1st song to the last.

I obviously don't listen to country music. Never have, never will.

I don't listen to as much hip hop as I used to. I still listen every once in a while, but I don't like most of it now.

What really irritates me is pop music. I like "some" pop music from the 80s, but cut me some slack, some of it was okay. But, now I am too old (I guess), and I cannot stand today's pop music. I hate 104 KRBE.

I can't list bands (too many), but here's a shot at genres I have come to appreciate:

Rock: from Zep to Vertical Horizon
Alternative: from Nirvana to the Foo Fighters
Pop: from the Beatles to Seal and Sting
    R&B: Mowtown, Atlantic and Stax
Singer/Songrwiter: from Billy Joel to Duncan Sheik
Jazz: from Chalie Parker to Teodros Avery
Fusion: from Miles Davis to Mike Stern
Instrumental: from Mahavishnu Orchestra to Joe Satriani
Pop Folk: from Joni Mitchell to the Indigo Girls
Funk: from the Brothers Johnson to Prince (and I am funky)
Latin/Salsa: from Santana to Ruben Blades
Hard Rock: from Rush to Creed
Pop Vocal: from Mel Torme and Frank Sinatra to Diana Krall and Cassandra Wilson

I also like some Brazilian, African and middle eastern music, a little blues and just about everything else except for serious country (anything beyond Rosanne Cash, kd lang and Lyle Lovett is a tad out of my range).

I wish I knew more about rap and hip hop and I'm embarrassed that the sugar hooks of Brittany Spears and the Backstreet Boys make me tap my foot.

I like a wide variety of music. I can't stand country. Motown is the greatest record label ever with their two greatest acts being Boyz II Men and the Temptations. I think i remember Rudy saying in his autobiography that he grew up a temptations fan.
Anyway, DREAMer: I definitely agree that Appetite for Destruction is a GREAT album but i may be topped by Boyz II Men's Cooleyhighharmony or Metallica's black album.
I, too, hate most modern pop, especially those blond chicks and those loser guy groups.

If you want to be cool like me pick up one of the 40 albums by the Cocteau Twins... you can't go wrong (Treasure is a good start).

Jeff, if you're listening to boys' bands... you'll never be as cool as me.

    Jeff,

What is your criteria for putting Zep in the Rock genre and Rush & Creed in the Hard Rock category?

Good question, Mango. I guess I've always considered Zep more of a rock band and Rush has always been pushed into the hard rock category. Maybe a more appropriate hard rock grouping would be Queensryche and Rage Against the Machine. Good question, though.

    Jeff,

Is it because they seemed "too popular" to just be a Hard Rock band?

I won't name the categories, just group them the way I hear it:

    Humble Pie
    Rolling Stones
    Small Faces
    Who
    etc

    Zep
    Pink Floyd
    Deep Purple
    Foghat
    Van Halen
    etc

    Rush
    U2
    Creed
    etc

    Black Sabbath
    Motley Crue
    Slayer
    Anthrax
    QueesnRyche
    etc

    Bowie
    Iggy
    Lou Reed
    etc

    Genesis
    Queen
    etc
    ---------------------------------------------
    TheFreak,

After looking at your list, I expected Slayer to be on it.

    Jeff,

I was wondering on your Nirvana classification. Just because they came out with something "new" doesn't make them "alternative". At least not in my book. I always considered them hard rock to rock.

    ---

    Steve_Francis_rules,

    1. I hate that screen name, because it takes too long to type.

    2. Any Metallica from "And Justice For All" and on, is no good. Please throw it away and only listen to: "Kill 'Em All", "Ride the Lightning", "Master of Puppets", and "Garage Days". I'm not saying that they never put out another good song. I'm just saying they never put out another good album.

    ---

    TheFreak,

I think you and I could go on a long road-trip and not kill each other fighting over the tape/CD player.

But, I despise the cheesy "hair" bands like: Poison, Warrant, Nelson, White Lion, etc.

    ---

I can't believe I forgot bands such as: Queen, AC/DC, The Cars, RATT, and Led Zepplin

In my last post i totally forgot to mention my favorite hip hops artists:
    2Pac
    DMX
    Nas
    NWA
    Naughty by Nature

    DREAMer:
I also have ...And Justice for all, but i haven't heard anything by Metallica put out before that. I guess I should check that out. I still think the black album is better than and justice for all, i like every song on it, but they're both good so it just depends on your personal tastes.

I know its just a classification, but I thought, like Jeff, that Nirvana not only has always been called alternative, but was actually the first band to popularize the alternative movement of th early 90's (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc, etc).

Anyway, some rap that has been left out is Southern rap. A lot of it is good,
    Outkast
    UGK (UnderGround Kings)

and some of it is pretty good
Juvenile and OTher Cah Money Records acts

and some is just a little too main stream but still alright
    read: Master P

Sticking with rap, Eazy-E was always funny at least and you cant forget Young M.C. (Bust-a-Move)

And some of the grandfathers of rap are the best,
    SugarHill Gang
    Grandmaster Flash
