Turner is worn out and needs to be put out to pasture. Abraham doesn't have much left. Robinson signed a ridiculous contract and he's not even close to the best CB on the team. Pretty simple decisions all around. If I was looking for a bruising complimentary back for a 1 year playoff run I'd take a look at Turner. Dunta priced himself out of 2 team's plans. Somebody will still pay him but his big money days are over.
Are these moves geared towards becoming more flexible, becoming a player in free agency? Or did they have to alleviate cap stress?
I don't even know what the market will be for Dunta right now - the NFL keeps changing. In the spread era, having real cover guys is critical and he hasn't been that in years. He morphed into a box safety masquerading as a CB....and given the increasing drive to run out all the head hunters, I don't know if a team is shopping for someone with that style of play anymore. I think both - they had a bloated payroll/cap situation and were a little bit over the cap. They could have gotten away with just dumping Turner, but this gives them space to make more significant moves - they want to bring back Gonzalez and reportedly want to get Stephen Jackson.
He had 10 sacks last year and almost averaged 10 per season while with the Falcons. I doubt he's done.
Hard to say if this is a great move, lateral move, or bad move. Have to see how FA and the draft goes.
