Thought I'd break this out into its own thread, since the details are all over the place. I'm sure @BimaThug will shed more light on this in a Salary Cap sticky, later.

[EDIT] update on the pseudo "TPE". $9.75m that can be aggregated, plus Uthoff gives us $2.275m more as separate trade value, and can be aggregated in two months.

Long cost us our 2018 2nd Rounder

The key behind getting all this is apparently Morey saving his allotted $3.5m Cash Considerations to use today. (The $3.5m is an annual TOTAL limit on cash spending.)

By added a couple players he bought today for cash, Morey was able to go over the cap to retain the Full MLE (vs the much smaller Room MLE), plus getting the BAE. And all of that was doubly converted into a larger trade exception.

I never doubted Morey, let it be known.

Morey is a poker player and he just went all in. Let's hope the card that flips over is the one he wants.

Will be worth looking into getting Snell, Olynyk, Galli, and/or Chandler at this rate.

Make no mistake. . . . People concerned about getting rid of big contracts or recruiting a bench

Morey knows those are the small issues. . .and can be fixed easier than getting the big rocks

    Great work Morey!
And thanks for compiling it heyP.

No matter what we do, there is a great chance to add some significant depth there. And then we can still throw the minimum at ring chasing vets

JJ Redick probably too pricy for that exception but would be a nice get to pair with Eric Gordon.

$11M trade exception, $8.4M MLE? In other words, Patrick Patterson money.

Could someone explain how the $11 MM trade exception was generated?

I think he had pocket Aces "up his sleeve" haha. Other teams praying for that card on the river to beat him now

Teams cannot use trade exceptions to sign free agents; they can be used only to acquire existing contracts from other teams. However, a team can acquire a free agent using a trade exception if he is signed by his prior team and traded in a sign-and-trade transaction.

A trade exception cannot be combined with another player or exception to acquire a more expensive player – To me, the easiest way to think about each trade exception is as a bank account that you cannot add money back into. You can take some out here and there as long as the balance never gets below zero. The important difference from a bank account is the separation – trade exceptions are each separate assets that can only acquire a player or players who make the same amount or less than the value of that specific exception itself plus $100,000. A $10 million TPE and a $5 million player or exception cannot be used in concert to get a $14 million player, for example. This same logic applies to all exceptions, so teams cannot combine their Mid-Level and a player to get someone for more money or add two trade exceptions together to pick up a player with a higher salary than either one.

Dude is a freakin' genius, or he has hired a team of math magicians.

Not to mention some props to Les for green lighting all those 'cash considerations' moves.

And to think people were dumb enough to want Morey fired.

Morey is not only setting up our starting unit to compete with GSW, but he is also planning a bench that will be just as good or better than the GSW, when we all thought he would just try to build a starting unit to compete this year, and work on the bench next.

When Morey is done, Houston could almost be considered the favorite to win it all, although we won't just because GSW just won it all, and we will have to prove that all of our pieces will fit and work together.
