What's the complain about sensitive people? Is it difficult to understand that people are different and have different degrees of tolerance for jokes? That's something that's personal to them - like having a favorite color or enjoying a particular hobby.

I personally don't find the Taiwanese dribble all that offensive, but if people do, then they do. Why are you writing their concerns off? Just understand that if you don't want to come across as an ******* around certain groups of people, don't say certain things.

You already censor yourself in a variety of contexts - you don't say the same things to your platonic girlfriends as you would to your GF; you don't say the same things to your boss as you would to your drinking buddies. This is no different.

He is American, but sometimes he does look a little Taiwanese to me. But that's just me, others may not see it.

Also, is it ok to call Patterson, Patsquatch?

Bill Worrell calls it a Taiwanese dribble because, sadly, he cannot see past a person's skin color and he doesn't know what "Taiwanese" means.

Lin was called "wonton" by opposing players and called "oriental kid" by opposing coach during college. He didn't react, not because he approved them. Heck, he even took the ESPN writer who wrote the "Chink in the armour" headline to lunch.

Same situation here, just because it's acceptable to a lot of you/us doesn't mean it's acceptable to him.

Show me proof that Lin ever referred himself to as "Taiwanese" or " Chinese". Otherwise, any reference to him as Taiwanese/Chinese is disrespectful.

LOL I teared, laughing at this comment.

why is everybody getting upset at the eurostep being called 'Taiwanese dribble' unless you think the eurostep looks ugly....then i would understand. If anything it's a compliment. If you guys don't like it you can always name it after me.

By the way, why would Chinese people need to be sensitive? What history? You guys are tripping. Chinese history owns, like the way how Egyptian history pwns. Chinese is the oldest standing civilization on earth. Get a cup of coffee, you guys need a caffeine fix.

couldnt find a video, but he did call it a euro step, and then was like, "err, Taiwanese dribble". He says the dumbest things just to be funny.

Maybe it was because it wasn't fluid and looked slightly awkward (now Asians think I'm calling them awkward... lol)

    That this actually bothered anybody....

If this bothered you, you suck.

Asians are way too oversensitive about these kind of things, just look in the all star thread about all the discussions surrounding votes from China vs. Taiwan.

Man, please educate us as to what "Taiwanese" means. Having parents from Taiwan and growing up in America, I don't think anyone I've ever met has ever considered it to be a derogatory term like you seem to be implying.

Show proof that Lin feels remotely disrespected if someone calls him either Taiwanese or Chinese. I've met a great number of Taiwanese/Chinese/American/whatevers born here or there, but I haven't met a single one who would be personally offended by any of these references.

But maybe I just haven't met anyone with a giant stick shoved 3 feet up their ass like you assume Jeremy Lin has.

Bill wasn't trying to say whether or not he's directly from Taiwan though, he was just trying to Lin a signature move.

For real though, the Shanghai Shake is pretty awesome but the Taiwanese dribble just doesn't have it, Lin's signature move should be ned the "Taiwanese Turnover" :p

Chinese/Taiwanese in themselves are by no means derogatory terms, but people can be offended being called something you're not. Not saying Lin is offended, but he himself has been avoiding these labels and people should respect that.

Korean/Japanese/Chinese/Taiwanese/HongKonger, these terms are not interchangeable. If you're not sure who's what, don't say anything.

Lin was asked about his identity numerous times during the past year. He always refers himself to as Asian and is proud of it. He also said first and foremost his identity is in Christ.

I like your idealism. However, I do not believe you can pin the race relations on the way I think. The way I think is the result of our race relations.

There are as just too numerous cases I can cite from my own and those I know. My own experience has been sobering and taught me to never assume people will know or think I am from here unless I tell them. My American English accent is not enough nor are my completelly culturally assimilated ideoms/behaviors. And guess what? - that happens to every new immigrant group going way back so really nothing new or special.

We are one of the most advanced nations when it comes to diversity and racial acceptance. Are we perfect yet? Hell no. It is still work in progress and always will be. Bill might have geniunely wanted to coin a new phrase perhaps to even compliment Lin. And that's when the subconscious slip came out "His is Taiwanese." Just ask yourself, did Lin learn that in Taiwan? No. Is Lin from Taiwan? No. So what does it have anything to do with Taiwan?

And if he had bothered to dig a little, he would know Lin has done the Eurostep before this season. He just could not do it until recently and still not fully since he basically had to relearn things after his knee surgery.

you're correct that most of those terms aren't interchangeable, but most people in america of asian descent aren't immediately offended if you peg them for the wrong race so long as you're not slinging slurs while doing it. from personal experience, westerners without extensive travels through asia have a tough time discerning between specific ethnicities; most people aren't really offended by this. unless there's malicious intent, it's hard for a case of mistaken race to be offensive to all but the nuttiest asian americans.

as for how Lin identifies, just because he says he identifies most as christian it doesn't mean he's offended by any ethnic identifiers. fact of the matter is, he's taiwanese, chinese, american, and christian. I highly doubt he's offended by any of these by themselves. the identifiers would only become blatantly offensive depending on the context.

I can't actually speak for jeremy, but I suspect the sensitive people on this board take a whole lot more offense on the topic than he does.

Your naivette is completely catching. Unfortunately it is far from real. Lin is basically unstoppable when he goes right and all the teams know that to stop him is to hard foul him. This kid takes so much beating everytime he goes up since Linsanity but he just keeps coming. Before he would at least get the foul calls but now the refs hardly call anymore.
