Looks like Morey is jealous his buddy Hinkie is getting to tank the way he always wished the Rockets could.

Why would Morey find time to offer input on a subject that doesn't concern him? Who cares about what 2/3 of the other teams are doing when your not in category?

This definitely won't sit well with other GM's around the league

    Morey is right.
    Nobody should play to loose
The actual NBA system is destroying the league.
    The East is ridiculous.
You have 2 great team and the rest think more in rebuild than in wining
Toronto was thinking in moving Lowry.

Other popular solutions include eliminating protected draft picks and abolishing the draft entirely, allowing rookies to enter the league as free agents.

    That would be horrible.

That "draft wheel" is horrible in my opinion. Saw that in a Zack Lowe article a few months back.

The lottery needs fixing, but the "wheel" is not the answer.

They would just be better off having every 'lottery team' an equal chance at the picks. It is not perfect by any means, but at least there isn't an incentive to lose as many games as possible.....just an incentive to lose 'enough' to get into the lottery. :p

    I like the wheel idea.

IMO, the draft (as currently constructed) has not proven to make badly managed franchises better over the long term. The bad teams from 5 years ago are still bad teams today, even though they've recieved a disproportionate amount of good picks. Cleveland and Sacramento are perfect examples.

To me, a better model would be to make sure teams have an incentive to win (or at least not an incentive to lose). Perhaps this will make for better managed franchises.

but thats what i like about morey, he isnt a tanker. we built a team without having to suck ass. it can be done. we didnt have to deal with watching a 15-20 win Rockets team. for all the people that were pro tankers, i dont think they realize how horrible it is to watch your team play like garbage for 2 years or so.

look at the b****ing that happens when we lose just one game. can you imagine how this board would look with multiple losing seasons? those same pro tankers would be the biggest complainers if they happened.

It's not just the tanking to get more ping pong balls, remember prior to Summer 2010 how half the league was making trades for expiring contracts to clear cap space for the Summer of Lebron? None of those teams were trying to improve the product on the floor that season, instead hoping to clear the roster and cap space in homes of landing the "game changing" free agents. This is how Morey was able to unload T-Mac on the Knicks, for example.

I think it JVG's idea of having all lottery teams play a single elimination tourney for the top pick, with the team with the best record having the top seed.

This would ensure that teams are trying the entire season, IMO.

I actually love the idea of all draftees being free agents. Solves a lot of issues.

That would be awesome. Too awesome, in fact, and that's why it wouldn't happen.

More games + high stakes + more money for the league + something to look forward to for bottom-dwellers. I see no real drawback. But still, it will never happen.

If the d league can continue to improve it can become a relegation league. The threat of relegation should keep teams from tanking, without having to rehaul the lottery. Lowest winning percentage is relegated. Relegation can be every season, every two seasons, or however long. Also a great way for certain markets to get back into the NBA (Seattle) through the d league.

Never will happen, look up what happened to Glenn Robinson, signed the richest rookie contract in NBA history, the rookie salary scale was implemented the next year.

Pro-sports exists to make money, relegation will reduce the value of a franchise by 80% overnight, which owner in their right mind will want a system that can do that to their asset?

I know it won't happen, but if some team wants to overpay for a rook, let them. They still have to deal with salary cap restrictions.

Morey is a pro tanker before Les thought otherwise because that was and still is the best option. It doesn't mean DM agrees with the method.
Sometimes reality isn't always the best option. This article offers an opinion.

This is an appealing idea but a couple concerns:

    1) what incentive do players have to win that tournament (maybe offer a large bonus to players on the winning team?)

    2) it also incentivizes marginal playoff teams to tank themselves out of the playoffs so they can get the #1 pick and draft that missing piece for a title
