If Roger Clemens pitches in The Pinstripes again next season, the Yankees are ready for his return.

    Cano
    Clemens
Second baseman Robinson Cano will give up his No. 22 if Clemens returns to the Bronx. Cano will switch to No. 24.

A team official told ESPN that Cano approached the team's equipment personnel and said he was aware that he was wearing Clemens' former number and hoped that the availability of the number would be a lure for Clemens to New York. Cano chose his new number because its digits reversed would be Jackie Robinson's old number.

Cano's uniform switch was first reported by The New York Post.

"I was happy to give up the number to a future Hall of Famer if Roger comes aboard," Cano said in a statement, according to The Post. "Hopefully, he will be one of my teammates, I'll have the pleasure of playing with him."

Clemens, who has pitched for Houston the past three seasons, wore No. 22 when he pitched for the Yankees from 1999-2003.

The Post reported that the number switch already might have been relayed to Clemens' representatives.

However, Randy Hendricks, Clemens' agent, told The Post in an e-mail that his client is in no hurry to pick a team.

"No decision will be made until well after spring training, perhaps until after the season starts," Hendricks wrote to The Post.

The Post reported that the number switch already might have been relayed to Clemens' representatives.

Any confirmation yet on whether or not the message did in fact get relayed to his representatives?

Like Clemens wouldn't have demanded that anyways if he goes to the Yanks...seriously, hall of fame pitcher who commands 20+ million a season and the reason he chooses NY....because Cano volunteered to switch his number. Please.

I want to see Roger Clemens versus Nolan Ryan fist fight. I'm thinking Nolan would win.

With Pettite gone and Carr on his way out, who's Rocket going to do HEB commercials with?

Biggio and Sage Rosenfels? That won't sell steaks. He's definitely gone.

Doesn't matter. The Yankees knew it would get "relayed" either way. Wouldn't shock me if they didn't tip them off just so it was a nice public kissy smoochy surprise for them.

I doubt the Post wants Clemens to remember their "Roger the Rat" or "Roger Becomes an Asstro" headlines from 3 years ago.

I bet he goes back to New York, they win it all this year and he retires for good.

This is where the selfishness shows up. I understand (sorta) not feeling like you can play a full season and wanting to start in June or whatnot. But if you're so committed to helping your team win, then at least tell them so they can make the best decisions to make the team as good as possible. For example, if Clemens is coming back, then perhaps that changes the Astros' thinking in terms of looking for another good starter.

I kinda think that they should be looking for another good stater even if RC does come back. Awww . . . who am I kidding . . . pitching doesn't win games . . . it's great hitting that propels teams deep into the post season . . . yawn.

Or he goes back to NY, makes it to the WS, and gets shelled for 6 runs on 9 hits in 1.1 innings by...

    ...the Astros. :D :D :D

If Roger really does go back to New York, someone has to do a video of him and Andy and the Guy Love song from Scrubs.
