End Game Playcalling: Give your best player the ball or working for the most efficient shot?

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by lfw, Mar 25, 2013.

?

With the game on the line, I would...

  1. Give the best player the ball and let him work

First of all, PLEASE don't make this thread a bash McHale/Harden or why Lin doesn't get to orchestrate the offense thread. <crossing fingers>

Read this interesting article on the plays called by Pop in the Spurs game:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/56018/the-spurs-unconventional-crunch-time

So, last possession of the game, next bucket wins it, what do you call? Do you give the ball to your best player and let him go to work? Or do you call a play to try and get the most efficient shot? What factors would influence your decision?

It's a little easier to do that when you have Duncan, Parker, and Manu.

So you are saying the type of players who make up the team would influence your decision?

Yup, definitely easier to do when you have 3 all star players. That said, give the ball to your best play maker hands down, every time. Let him make that decision to either shoot or pass it to the open man.

The talent level certainly would. If we had run the exact same play as the Spurs with Asik shooting from 15 feet, would you consider that an efficient shot?

I read somewhere that there were multiple options on that play when they inbounded the ball to Duncan, including passing it to a hard-cutting Manu but Beverly covered him tight.

I'm sure there were, but in our case I frankly don't trust anyone on our team outside of Harden to make a play at the end of the game. If we run a play with James attacking the basket and dishing to an open shooter if help comes, I'm okay with that.

I think it's a combination of the two, really.

Give to the Hardens and the Kobes of the world, and let them either get what they think is their own best shot, or pass it out.

The best player would likely draw a double / triple team anyway, and leave one person open for the (hopefully) easy jumper.

if i have Pop's team, go for the best shot. lots of reliable consistent options.

our team? Harden to the left, right or down the middle.

I agree with Harden having the ball because he has playmaking skills in addition to being a great scorer and foul-drawing machine.

But in what situation would you go the other way and work for the best shot?

Good thread. So to keep it simple this is how I feel like should happen on the last play:

15+ seconds left: Work for most efficient shot
Less than 10 seconds: Give it to best player

Exactly. It's much easier for a seasoned veteran team and well oil ed machine like the Spurs to come up with an efficient last play. Not many teams can do it. Certainly not the current Rox. I'd give it to harden every single time. You go where your franchise player takes you.

This isn't college basketball. In the NBA, you give it to your best player and let him create for himself or others. The first two choices in the poll are not mutually exclusive.

I agree with this statement but I think you know what I mean by the choices.

Work for most efficient shot. For Rockets, give it to Harden and give him a screen.

Give it to Harden and run Drexler's 1-4 flat.

What is my roster? Who is the coach? Who is the best player on my team. Have to be more specific.
