I think a Sea Dog is military related, so I'm not surprised that it had some popularity in the DC area during the Bullets name change.
Washington should of changed there name something to like Predators. Washington Predators sounds good or what about New Orleans Predators
Umm... Well run: Chicago Bulls Los Angeles Clippers Los Angeles Lakers Utah Jazz San Francisco Giants Indianapolis Colts Not so well run: Houston Astros Orlando Magic San Francisco 49ers (2000's) Detroit Pistons Philadelphia 76ers And many more. It's a crapshoot really and even the names above run in cycles. It wasn't all that long ago that the Colts were as bad an organization as it got. The polar opposite for Astros.
why even have a nickname though, why not just have the city names solely like in Europe, avoid the "Pelican" issue altogether
I recall reading a great Grantland article (that I now cannot find, sorry) that addressed this exact topic. The gist of it was that European clubs are more stationary and closely intertwined with the culture of the areas they represent. Meanwhile, NBA teams have just a select few storied franchises, and every other team changes cities every decade or few. Even the Houston Rockets were not created as a tie-in to the NASA center in Houston. That was just a happy coincidence. They were once the San Diego Rockets...
Hmmm Dragons... Maybe Les would consider the "Houston Dragons"? Would help with the China marketing. lol
