We are beginning to see the realization of Morey's most easily identifiable draft principal....pick guys that can finish at the rim, then teach them to shoot. Everyone is talking about our ability to space the floor, but we now have an open freeway to the basket available not just to Harden, but our young guys as well. Here's how our prospects are finishing at the rim so far this season.... Dekker: 73% Harrell: 70% McDaniels: 69% Capela: 70% Obviously Capela isn't being groomed to be a shooter, and while I believe Harrell can add a reliable jumper, he's not there yet. What all of them have in common is that in college (and international competition for Capela), they could all finish around the rim at an elite level. Dekker and Harrell were both in the top 3 in FG% in the paint in college. McDaniels has always had that insane length and athleticism to finish above the rim....same for Capela. If any of them become league average shooters and solid defenders, they will get max-ish contracts. Amazing.
Capela should finish at a higher clip. So many bunnies and mistimed layups. He needs to have Harrell's mentality which is dunk everything.
This is because Morey believes as I do that finishing is either something you can or cannot do. It can't be taught.
Draft strategy: 1) Is the player a great athlete or possess top tier physical tools? If yes, then is he coachable? If yes, then draft. 2) if answer to question 1 is 'no' does the player have an elite skill set? If yes, then is he at least around an average athlete? If yes, then draft. 3) is he chinese or of asian decent If your name is Les, then draft
Rare skill set for his position (in college). Ceiling was a triple double threat. However, in actuality, he was just a threat to sanity.
