Do we want to trade up in the draft? ... or do a draft day trade?

I remember Rocketfan34's post a few weeks back, in which he said he had a Staple's Center janitor as a source (that was funny) which told him that the Rockets were talking with the Clippers about a draft day trade of Kenny, Drew, TMass, Detroit's 1st or Orlando's first for a top 3 pick. He mentioned that they were also shopping Mo and Candi.

For one thing, I have to admit I don't understand trades for draft picks and how the cap is involved. If Candi was thrown into the deal for the 4.5 mil exception, it would be a real coup, and even better if we could throw in Williams, and trade for another center or 3.

Will the guys in the first 6 picks be superstars in the NBA? Is this draft good enough to justify losing Drew, Thomas and a first round pick, or could we trade for someone better that's already starting to prove themselves, and still pick up Swift, Johnson or Morris? If Candi was in the deal, and we stayed at #6, we could end up with:

Martin, Morris or Swift or Johnson, and Candi.

After Dream left, that would give us:

Candi/Cato
Martin or Swift/Rogers
Morris/Bullard
Anderson/Mobely
Francis/Moochie

We might have 2 other stars with Francis.

Not bad rebuilding process.

I was also wondering about trading up in the draft. On getting 'Kandi, I have no opinion. People keep telling me this is going to be a weak draft. But people say that every year, so I now disregard such predictions. So here is what I'm wondering: Given our current #6 spot, how much would we profit from trying to move up? I know very little about college players (I know only what I learn here essentially) but it seems you've got Martin, Morris (if he comes out), Mihm, Woods, Demarr Johnson, Swift, Fizer and several others that various people are high on (I recognize others have low opinions of some of these -- Mihm -- but don't choke this thread with yet another bashing). That right there is seven guys worth taking with our #1 (besides others who have been praised but I've forgotten), so at least one will remain when our turn comes around. Do we need to climb any further than #6?

I really dont want to trade for Olawakandi. Hes a project and so is Cato. They both need work. The desired situation is to have one proven NBA star and then if neccesary one project. If you have two projects and no real backbone for that certain position, I think you are cutting yourself short.

I definitely agree with you there. I don't really think we should even get Kandi, if anything, we should get Taylor.

The clock is winding down, and Scottie has the ball, Cato is sprinting towards him, Pippen shoots and here comes Cato. Man did you see that block?!!! Ouch it hit Scottie right between the legs. ITS FINAL!! THE ROCKETS ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF Y2K!!!

Kandi doesn't really impress me, i think Cato could/should become a better player than him...he just has to work on that post up game of his.

What a crappy draft that was. The best choices were Jamal Crawford and Jabari Smith Sr.

Without even trading up an interesting prospect might be Reed Sheppard from Kentucky.

54.3 FG% and 55.3 3PT%

Sheppard doesn’t even start for Kentucky, but he’s currently putting together one of the greatest freshmen seasons in recent memory, with a box plus/minus that trails only Zion Williamson, Anthony Davis, and Michael Beasley. Sheppard is the best shooter in the class: he’s making 54.1 percent of his three-pointers on 61 attempts, and he’s 84 percent from the foul line. He has a super quick release, deep range, and a willingness to fire them in transition. Sheppard is also a major playmaker defensively: he has magnets for hands to rack up steals and blocks, and is always giving second efforts to finish plays.

If Stone decides to retain the 2024 Nets pick, then he should send scouts to France. I'm somewhat interested in Salaun at 8 right now.

I do think a draft day trade will be better though.

We need a superior player than Mikal Bridges.

If the Rockets can't trade up to get Sarr, I would want them to take a look at Ulrich Chomche at #8.

In a draft like this with so many unknowns and a low ceiling on the top prospects it might even be better to trade down and just try and get more prospects since the Hawks and Knicks have multiple picks in the draft.

How do we know prospects like Tidjane Salaun, Keyshawn George and Johnny Furphy won't be better than the top picks like Cody Williams, Ron Holland and Matas Buzelis? Except for maybe Alexander Sarr the top lotto picks always have some sort of flaw whether that's height, weight or lack of shooting. There will def be talents dropping in this draft ala Haliburton in the 2020 draft.

I like this thought pattern.

If we don't fluke a top 4, then flip back to both Knicks picks and take Furphy and Ware (for example!)

Yeah, with Green and Landales improved play we don't really have a glaring need anymore, I think it's better to take more chances and possibly strike gold.

I think with the draft being so weak and nobody standing our there might be hidden gems in the latter part of the draft ala Herb Jones or Desmond Bane. Ware is a good example I haven't seen mock draft have him in the lotto but he can turn out to be the best center in this draft.

The glaring need is still shooting. Get someone that can do that maybe an upperclassman to increase the chances of the pick working out/ contributing as soon as possible.

I'm against this because that upperclass man will have to beat Jalen Green, Tari Eason, Cam Whitmore and Dillon Brooks for PT. If we get someone with potential he will either be so talented he beats out any of the aforementioned guys or he can develop in GLeague.

Sometimes getting upperclassmen like JJJ, Desmond Bane and Herb Jones works out but most of the time they just become a replacement level player. Chris Dourte, Quentin Grimes, Corey Kispert none of these guys would get more than spot mins on our team if any and that'd be a huge waste of our lotto pick.

We need a Rim Running Center. That's the one element we do not have on this roster. Either Alexandre Sarr or Kel'el Ware has to be the pick.

Both can play center or PF. It will give Ime the ability to mix and match, playing big.
