It always surprises me the lengths the Astros will go through to not to lose starting pitching, even if it isn't that good. That said, their best efforts of hoarding still have Martes starting tonight.
Keuchel? Depending on how strict on home-grown...some people would include Musgrove, Paulino, and Martes due to little time in other systems though defintely not the best. VV, Lyles, Norris, Wandy were also home-grown before departing.
Sadly, Carlos Hernandez never got to show how good he could have been. If not for his injury, he could still be pitching. He's only 37.
I was thinking #1-2 SP types. How many has the farm actually yeilded? I wouldnt put VV, Lyles, Norris, Wandy, Musgrove, Paulino, and Martes in that catagory.
Folty, Velasquez, Troy Patton, Lyles. Bogusevic? Early 00's were really awful drafts for the most part edit: just saw your reply. I'd like to see what the #'s say in terms of how many of the top 60 pitchers in the MLB were 1st round picks, international signings, and "other", and what other teams look like in terms of drafting and developing top flight starters without drafting them in the 1st round.
If you're going at or since Oswalt and a #1 or #2, the answer is essentially Keuchel, McCullers, Wade Miller, perhaps Wandy. Prior to that, you had Richard, Kile, Don Wilson, Dierker, Andujar (moreso with St. Louis).
I wouldn't put any of those guys in that category. Wandy was close to being a No.2 and arguably one for a short period, but likely most would call him a number 3. Musgrove, Paulino, and Martes all could become No.2s, but it more likely are either MoR, BoR, or AAAA guys.
Yep, either that or they are going to DFA someone. Moran or Preston Tucker would be the most likely, I would imagine. At some point, when McHugh comes back, they'll need to make that decision again.
With the usage of our bullpen being one of the highest in MLB, I was thinking that they would not DFA a pitcher. But yeah, it would be hard to DFA Moran or Tucker, in my mind. I guess they could DFA a pitcher or Aoki, but if they decide to keep all their pitchers, who else would they DFA?
Tucker is much more likely to go than Moran... he's almost 27, and is behind Fisher and Teoscar in the OF pecking order with no positional flexibility. I would guess Jankowski is also a candidate. He hasn't really covered himself in glory in his brief MLB appearances. Diaz and Tolliver are also candidates to be DFAd as they're basically AAAA guys there to soak up innings.
The farm didn't yield jack s**t of any kind for over a decade, it's why we had to tear the whole thing down and start as basically an expansion franchise
