What are myths or "common sayings" about the NBA that aren't quite true? List other sports, as well.

    1. No Defense League:

    https://jbonsu1.wordpress.com/2014/10/21/myths-about-the-nba-nobody-plays-defense/

    2. NBA Myth: Today's Players' CAN'T Shoot

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0mYC7FKlmvI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    3. Teams are weaker, now.

This is controversial... most people will say teams were better in the 80s and early 90s. Boston, LA, Detroit, Philly, Chicago, and Houston. Yet, forget the other 20 teams marred in mediocrity and dysfunction. In 30 years, the East has gotten slightly worse, but not as much as most assume.

Someone once said on an ESPN forum, that the 82 Clippers would be a playoff teams, nowadays (circa 2009-2010). I apply that to 2012-15. There's no way that the 82 Clippers would've beaten any modern West coast team with .500 or better record in a playoff series.

The modern-day Western Conference (1993 - present) is arguably the premier conference in American sports. Next to oddly enough to NHL's Western Conference. Which are both accused of having too many playoff teams.

    4. Players can't stay healthy or in peak form - In rigorous athletics, that's extremely difficulty.

    5. General myths:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hruby/051104

    6. Why do we continue to ignore matchups?

Like the everything else, the NBA is about matchups, which is why I am reluctant to name the greatest team ever, because even amongst the greatest team, they had their weaknesses or lesser teams that they did not matchup with very well.

Example, the Patriots would be the greatest dynasty in pro sports history, if it weren't for two teams -- NYG and Baltimore Ravens. Two teams with a hellish pass rush against a great QB without elite athleticism (yet Manning has plated better against those teams). Same thing with Montana against the Giants in the 80s. Oddly enough, there were QBs that the Giants struggle against in vice versa. I've seen really good

In basketball, it works the same way. One example, Pippen always guarded the other teams best perimeter player. Often, but not quite.

The Houston Rockets' two NBA Championships have an asterisk* beside them because Michael Jordan was off playing baseball.

I think teams aren't as good then before and the league is a watered down version of itself. Superstars can literally coast to 30pts due to how the rules are now. That's why I don't consider Lebron top 5 of all time. Superstars don't have to work as hard now a days. No myth

Always remember to ask anyone who says that this question: What player scored the most points in a single game during the 1995 regular season and again in the playoffs?

so the fact that track and field, football, soccer, basketball players are faster, bigger, and stronger then they have ever been means nothing.

You must not have watched that video or read the link.

When you say teams, most teams aren't as good as 1980s Celtics or Lakers ...Pistons or 76ers. Still, again you are not looking at the entire conferences ... Do you think the Western Conference from 1980 to 1987 is as good as it is right now? You do realize back in mid 80s, it was common for a 45 win or worse team to get 2 or 3 seed in the West.

Rules myth: If you pick up your pivot foot when you are holding the ball that is a travel.

Reality: If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor. If he drops the ball while in the air, he may not be the first to touch the ball.

    1960-1986: 41 player seasons of 30+ PPG
1987-2015: 23 player seasons of 30+ PPG (once in the last 5 years)

    Next.

X inside post player (whose now old) would have dominated in todays game with the lack of inside talents nowadays.

Completely untrue, X inside players didn't have to deal with the newly hybrid more efficient evolved pick and roll offence and zone defence. I hated it when I hear this on broadcast all the time. X player might have figure out how to evolve his play, but there's no way this player would have dominated todays game if they played the same style.

The perception that expansion has hurt the game is the dumbest thing around.

The number of people on earth, the number with the physical ability to play basketball, their access to quality basketball training & competition, their financial incentives to do so, and their paths to the NBA is sooooo much greater now than it was in the 80's.

The number of roster spots has increased what, a few dozen with each round? The talent pool has meanwhile expanded geometrically or even exponentially.

You will definitely see dilution from expansion, but that effect is so short lived it probably doesn't make it past 1-2 years.

    29. or 21.

You need A-Level (top 5-10) players to win a championship, not necessarily.

30 or 22 (other sports section).

MONEYBALL OR ANALYTICALLY DRIVE GMS ONLY CARE ABOUT STATISTICS AND METRICS OF PLAYERS AND NOTHING ELSE. VERY INCORRECT!!!

    Other (sports) myths:

    1. PEDs/steroid usage makes you bigger. Not necessarily that help you recover faster from injuries and rejuvenate muscle energy, faster. It also doesn't necessarily increase stamina or fix bad mechanics.

    2. You need great QB to win a Super Bowl, not necessarily.
You need great running game to win a Super Bowl, not necessarily.
You need a good defense to win a Super Bowl, not necessarily, just as long as it's not completely awful and has some tangible advantages, like forced turnovers or denial of big plays or protection in red zone.

    3. Michael Vick was convicted federally for illegal interstate commerce, not specifically dogfighting. Which is felony, but most sentence tend to be very light.

    4. Old NFL greats, like Steelers, Cowboys, and 49ers were only great, because they did not have salary cap and stole everyone else's best players. True and false. Typically, those teams drafted very well and as most of their best players were draftees of their franchise. Also, teams often could be very tight with money often decide between keeping their best players and letting go of players who weren't cutting or simply had . Also, the league didn't institute true "unfettered" free agency until 1992.

Myth: Michael Jordan is the best player of all times. ALL TIMES.

Truth: Michael Jordan is the best player of all times after Hakeem Olajuwon.

George: No something is bunk and then you debunk it.

What doesn't get mentioned enough is how the league is now more diluted. If there were less teams we would still see the same level of competition.

In 1980 there were 23 teams instead of 30. If the league got rid of 7 teams today it would overall have more talent.

    "NBA plays no defense".

Translation : black players are lazy.

Ask Adam Morrison if the defense in the NBA sucks.
