This is exactly my point. It's not that Capela won't be a Rocket next season. He will be. But if Tilman tries to nickel and dime his way through the negotiations and alienates Capela, that could impact next summer. If Clint takes the qualifying offer, he'll be free to go anywhere he wants next offseason. Sure, the Rockets will have the ability to offer him the most money. But that presupposes that A) Tilman actually will offer max(or close to max) money and B) Clint will agree to it and not simply choose to go elsewhere.

And people can downplay the losses of Ariza and Luc, but Capela is absolutely essential to this team's success. That 42-3 regular season record when he, Harden, and CP3 all played was no fluke. Morey and Tilman need to find a way to lock this guy up for 4 years. Get that issue off the table so they can focus on restocking the roster with wing players and avoid a major headache with Capela all next season.

Need some wing defenders badly since our offense was terrible in the playoffs. Defense was the only reason they hung with the Warriors. Team was 7 out of 16 in playoffs ppg and was held under 100 pts 5 games in a row by the Warriors. So yeah 3 and D guys are critical for their defense.

Have you guys ever wonder why so many teams are signing one year deals this off season? Not just the Lakers.

This means next summer is a huge FA market with so many teams having cap space. This year is the calm before the storm with only a couple of true FA and rest are restricted.

This will only get intense as the season progress, specially teams in the east as they will try to either trade or get space room before the deadline.

I suspect Morey to play a role in this and use the opportunity to trade for a good player or two.

This is correct but it also locks us up in terms of flexibility and cap space.

With Max Harden and CP3 we have no room unless Ryno is dealt. Offering CC will ensure we have no room and waste Harden prime along with CP3 if we can't get Ryno out.

Now, by getting rid of Ryno we may need to package EG or CC along with him as we have no high picks. Additionally, we will need to feature Ryno during reg reason to show that he still can play but just not ideal for us.

This must be part of that Chicken Little gang @Plowman was referring to.

4/ 60-64 M sounds all right to me, even though he seems closer to 4-50 M.

well we lost our defense anker and sub-anker, and we are planning to sign a defensive blackhole, if Melo comes, we will not make it to the conference finals, mark my words

The correct pun for this thread title should be

Daryl Morey is smart, but he's got no cents.

    No cap space
No bird rights to role players
    No financial flexibility
    No cents

Why are the majority flipping out? The money will be spent regardless! Ariza and Luc at the end of the day do no move the needle! What failed the rockets wasn’t the defense but offense.

Luc didn’t even play in the playoffs. The rockets are fine and should be able to manage. We know no one can really lock up Kd but you have to muddy up the game with physical play to win regardless. Morey won’t have trouble finding suitable defensive players and if they get melo then those defensive players don’t have to jack up threes like Ariza does!

It was implied by management multiple times that he would. If we aren't going to dip into the luxury tax we aren't going to compete against the Warriors.

Cap limitations did not prevent us from losing both Ariza & Luc. Just saying.

We ARE dipping into luxury tax. The only way we won't "dip" into the luxury tax this year is if we don't use our MLE and Capela takes his QO. That would leave us like $1 million under the luxury tax threshold.

More likely we sign Capela and use our MLE on a combination of Melo and our 2nd round pick which combined will put us more than $20 million over the luxury tax threshold.

"________ is smart, but he/she has no sense" is the not-smart person's way of making themselves feel better about not being among the smart ones.

He's a star chaser, plain and simple. Doesn't value chemistry as much as we would've made ourselves believe over the last few years and tends to go after guys who not quite have it (anymore). A 'big 3' of Harden, Melo & CP3 would be one of the saddest trios in sports history.
