Sounds like a familial coup to me - targeting particular tribes, propping up favorite cousins, and that whole sort of mess.

Crazy to think that the guy who may be wielding the most power in Saudi Arabia right now is only 32 years old.

Crazy to think that the guy who may be wielding the most power in Saudi Arabia right now is Donald Trump.

I don't know if I'd call it a coup since he's crown prince anyway. Sounds more like a preemptive strike to assure there won't be a coup against him. In any case, your system of government is dysfunctional if your leaders are using the judicial system against each other to amass personal power. It's too bad so many people in the world have to put up with bs like this. We put up with bs here in the US, but its not because we want to, not because we have to.

They're being held in a Ritz Carlton at the moment so I wouldn't go as far as calling it "jail" but yes this is a clear shot at the entire spectrum. Members of the royal family, intellectuals and even religious leaders were targeted. This was a message directed to everyone in Saudi Arabia. We might be witnessing the end of both the divided powers among the Al Saud family in favor of a unified monarch as well as the end of the independence of the Wahhabi clerical institutions. The House of Saud has historically avoided any direct control of religious institutions in Saudi Arabia. That might be over now.

I wonder what our response would be if we had a president.

If Alwaleed bin Talal never makes it out of prison again, I won't shed a tear.

Come on, I know you are aware of the deal that the House of Saud has with the clerical establishment in Saudi Arabia. That deal is on the verge of being shattered. I certainly am not suggesting that Saudis will actually be better off for it. Salman has shown himself to be quite reckless thus far given the disaster in Yemen and the stupid Qatar blockade (which was supposed to quickly end but instead has turned into a long stalemate) but this move consolidates his power within the royal family and paves the way for consolidation outside of the family's traditional influence. This is a tremendous event and adds more instability to an already unstable Middle East.

This has been in the works for sometime - at least dating back to when he appointed his favorite son to some rather significant government posts.

IMO, Saudi Arabia is barely a salvageable country. It will take a bumpy ride into irrelevance in coming years because it wasted the prior 50 staying the same as the world progressed.

This is getting very interesting (and dangerous).

Gotta admit I didn't realize the PM of Lebanon was in Saudi Arabia when he resigned. It appears he is being detained and the resignation was coerced. Now Saudi Arabia is asking all it's citizens to leave Lebanon. Other Gulf countries have done the same.

Something very bad is about to happen.

No needs to have Sherlock Holmes investigation skills for this matter, he was threatened repeatedly to be killed like his father by the coalition of Iran/Hezbo./Assad but this time
Obviously, the Saudi Crown Prince is aiming to go into a war with Iran and looking to escalate the situation

It may not be that simple.

Hariri has not communicated since his resignation speech. I read somewhere he had plans in Lebanon two days after the speech and it was clear he did not plan to stay in KSA.

Are you saying the Saudis forced him to resign and are detaining him for his own good?

He had appointed an ambassador to Syria recently which is a Saudi big NO, his inherited multiBillions company in Saudi Arabia had gone into bankruptcy in the past 2 years without having to pay a liability of billions of unpaid bills , they are trying to replace him with his Auntie Bahia

I think Alhairiri family are just too clean/naive to deal with armed cartel oppositions
