So I was walking to my car, and there's parking meters. I see a group of about 5 or so people standing near my car. I walk over, and one of the guys starts yelling at me "You have to pay." and I'm like "yeah, I did pay" and he's like "no, you have to pay." and I'm like "yes I did pay" and he's like "who" and I'm like "I put the money in the meter" and he's like "you have to pay."

So then his friends start yelling at me, and signing at me (I don't understand ASL so I think that was part of the probelm) before one of them reads the sign that says to pay the meter with quarters.

It wasn't until after they left that I realized he was asking me if I needed to pay, not commanding me to pay someone.

I believe there are a couple of deaf members on here, and I'm sure at least a hand few know someone who's hearing impaired- so my question is, how can I talk with someone who may not be able to read lips if I don't know ASL?

One time I was walking in Montrose near Numbers and this guy came up to me, didn't say anything, but pretended to be sucking on a lollipop or something with his hands. I don't think he was deaf though.

This. I met a deaf guy at the post office once and that's how I communicated with him.

That, or if he didn't say it with such a flat tone (although that's not really his fault)

    Sounds like its his fault.

First of all, get away from my car, then kindly ask nicely if I needed to pay the meter fee. You yell at me you're ****ing out.
