I want to create this thread so everyone can follow who wins. I hear that all tie breakers will be held tomorrow morning and in years past, it was shown on NBATV. My predicition is Golden State will win the 8th spot, Boston will win the 6th spot, Atlanta will win the 3th spot.
So we're either going to be 8th or 9th place, right? I believe these are our chances of getting each pick for those two scenarios. Probability of landing the 12th pick, while theoretically possible, is negligible. In order of likelihood, our pick could be: 9th, 8th, 10th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, 11th, or 12th. Code: 8 9 1 2.8 1.7 2 3.3 2 3 3.9 2.4 4 0 0 DRAFT 5 0 0 PICK 6 0 0 7 0 0 8 72.4 0 9 16.8 81.3 10 0.8 12.2 11 0 0.4 12 0 0 13 0 0 14 0 0
The tied teams split the number of lottery balls. The tiebreaker just determines who picks first if neither team wins a pick. So the percentages to land the #1 pick are about 2.3% for both the Rockets and the Warriors.
According to the Chronicle. Last year it was shawn live on NBATV according to this: Five ties among teams that finished the 2004-05 regular season with identical records were broken today through random drawings to help determine the order of selection for NBA Draft 2005, which will be held on Tuesday, June 28, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The drawings were conducted live on NBA TV earlier today at the St. Regis Hotel in New York by Stu Jackson, NBA Senior Vice President, Basketball Operations. Here is the link from last year: http://nbadraft.net/2005tiebreakers.asp
And according to Clutch's article, one extra lottery ball is at stake too! [Note to myself: Amassing too much NBA knowledge, need to get more of a life]
A "Live on ESPN2!" Rock, Paper, Scissors grudge match would be so much cooler. Maybe the NBA could get Mel Kiper, Jr.'s hair to do play-by-play. STEPHEN A. SMITH (a man so loud and obnoxious, you just have to write his name in all caps) could do color commentary. I smell a ratings bonanza!
Someone from the Boston message board says: 11 am on nbatv today. (I am not sure Eastern or Central) It was on the wiretap about 5 or 10 minutes ago.
Houston just won the tie breaker (for the 8th spot) over Golden State per NBATV results a few minutes ago.
It's already been discussed that the difference in the 8 and 9 columns will be alot less, as the 8 will have 23 chances and the 9 column will have 22 chances. However, mathematically, what is the reason that a team has a better chance of getting the 3 seed than getting the 2 seed, and a better chance at getting the 2 seed than getting the 1 seed. Is it because they draw the #1 pick first, and then remove that teams ping pong balls from the #2 pick drawing, thus increasing the odds of the remaining teams getting the #2 pick?
Also means the lowest pick the Rockets can get is the #11 pick, and that's only if 3 of the 5 teams below Houston get lucky.
1) Portland 2) Chicago (via New York) 3) Charlotte 4) Atlanta 5) Toronto 6) Minnesota 7) Boston 8) Houston 9) Golden State 10) Seattle 11) Orlando 12) New Orleans 13) 76ers
