Fans always overly blame the coach or overly praise the coach. Fans always think that firing or hiring a coach will make a difference. But the reality is that Morey is basically right - coaching doesn't matter.

    Proof:
Despite being considered a Grade F coach, Rockets did very well under McHale simply because they had the talent to win.

Luke Walton was considered an up and coming genius but is widely considered a bust in Los Angeles. But in reality he is neither. Lakers have lottery team talent.

Mike Brown was considered a mediocre coach. Now with the Warriors, he has become the best coach in the NBA.

I could go on and on.

Bottom line, coaching just doesn't matter. You have the talent, you look like a coaching genius. You don't, you look like a bad coach.

they getting paid millions of dollars to put a ball in a basket so sometimes they lose focus. they just need someone to remind them to play harder and clap at them a few times.

Coaching matters. Players matters. Front Office matters. Owners matters.

They have to all come together for an organisation to be able to have a chance to win a championships.

Without Dennis Rodman, bulls would not have gotten its 2nd three peat. Phil Jackson made that possible. People forget that Popovich couldn't handle Dennis Rodman and had him traded when he was GM. Someone as supremely talented as Dennis Rodman straddled the fine line between Hall of Famer and trying to kill himself in a car somewhere.

    Coaching doesn't matter?
Would we win those 2 rings in Houston without Rudy T at the helm?
Because I think we probably would be ringless without Rudy.

Lol Phil Jackson in his prime was something else too. Master psychiatrist, Zen Master and HOF coach.

This is pretty dumb, coaching matters a lot. Even if you take away all the plays, trainings and tactics a coach designs, what about the training plan and the subs during games?

Look at MDA not playing any of the bench and playing just 7 guys for one series. You think a better coach wouldn't have made an impact? Btw look at GSW during marc jackson's last year and Kerr's first year if you don't think coaching matters.

I think you meant to say coaching doesn't matter as much as the player talent.

You can put me in the coaching is overstated bandwagon, but it DOES matter. I'll point to the 2013 Spurs/Heat series in which Morey picked the Heat to win (on record on 790) because of their superior talent. Spurs won. Coaching played a big part of it.

Case #2, Rudy T. wins bronze with Brad Miller and a bunch of WNBA players.

MDmA coached this team up. It matters, but you're right about depth of talent too. Gotta have both to win it all. The Kobe/Shaq Lakers were busts until Phil "Calls LeBron's Friends A Posse" Jackson arrived.

The coach definitely matters. It matters big time. What we really don't need is an established vet coach with a big name all the time. We just need one who has the capability to draw up plans and knows how to utilize the players he is surrounded with. Sometimes new blood brings in a new innovative approach to the game that hasn't been seen before. Steve kerr, rudy T, Phil Jackson(tex winters), Doc Rivers (Thibs), Pops, Eric Spoelstra all took their previous experience and inserted a new twist and were pioneers. Would the Golden State Warriors of two years ago be what they were if Kerr wasn't coaching that team? He implemented a great system with the help of his coaching staff amongst other things. When Phil took over the bulls, could they have won and dominated without a triangle system? Heck the Orlando Magic was oozzing with talent in 95. They never got it done. The Blazers of 2000 was stacked with a bunch of talent and never won as well. It takes both good players that fit a good coach with a great system. It all goes hand in hand.

This is the right answer. We also forget the Owners matter as well. OKC is the best example of it. They are going to over apend on westbrook and probably deny him of any championship talent for the rest of his tenure there.

    Exactly.

Coaches can make a difference of +/- 5 to 10 wins in the regular season, and their crisis management/preparation/motivational skills can decide some games in the playoffs.
