Yeah, most "deeply personal matters" require a statement released to the media.

I'm sorry and I don't wish cancer on anyone (give or take Sandusky himself) but this is clearly being released to create sympathy and to keep people from hounding him about the horror.

This sucks if true, but the older you get, the more likely you are to get cancer, in most cases.

It's like the Kardashian family asking people to respect their privacy.

Just when I thought this couldn't get any weirder, wow. This is like the mother of all Jerry Springer episodes.

For better or worse Joe Paterno is someone in the news and people are still trying to cover him. In this case it makes sense that they would make a press statement on this matter.

Do you think this report might not be true and is just a ploy to garner sympathy?

Well, the dude is 84. Hell, none of my grandparents made it to 84 and none of them died of cancer. Not to sound insensitive here, but I can't help but agree with B-Bob here.

Oh, no way. I didn't mean to imply that, and even in this strange and sometimes surreal case at Penn State, I don't think JoePa would fake cancer!

EDIT: what I meant is that I bet he and his family normally would have kept this to themselves until after the season, and even then, they might have kept it truly private, not just press release private.

I wish Sandusky had cancer, more specifically testicular cancer.

    That b*stard deserves to suffer.

He will get his no doubt about that. That is unless he offs himself before standing trial.

He would be lucky to get cancer and die. I would rather see him get gang raped in prison for the next 10 years.

How long ago did your grandparents pass?

Cancer detection has improved drastically, there's the possibility at least one of them had it without anybody realizing it.

One of my grandmothers was 78 and died of dementia and the other was 79 and died of congested heart failure. One of my grandfathers died when he was 54 from alcoholism and the other died before I was born from lung cancer (my mom was 12 when he died). I believe he was in his late 40s to early 50s and was a heavy smoker.

My point is that Paterno has lived a long time - longer than many on average I would say. It is sad that he has lung cancer but to me not as sad as someone who is half his age, if you see what I am saying. Like B-Bob said, I can't help but wonder if this would be revealed if the mess with Sandusky wasn't going on.

**** no, I'm glad he said that!

Why should we care about him when he obviously didn't care about children's wellbeing after letting that sick SOB continue to walk around campus?!

    Karma is a female dog!
