This is from an article I wrote called "Clutch Notes" on March 24, 1997 for the original ClutchFans site (then called "Clutch City '97"):

This is from the Houston Chronicle on July 16, 1996.

I'd like to find out though what contract Tim Hardaway did ultimately get back then with the Heat. His stock was lower because he was coming back from injuries and possibly getting a bad rap -- the Heat had acquired him just months before on the relative cheap (Hardaway/Chris Gatling for Kevin Willis/Bimbo Coles).

The Heat were all-in on getting Gary Payton, offering him $90 million before he signed back with the Sonics. So that created two weeks (7/1/96 to 7/15/96) where Hardaway was looking for the right situation, thinking Miami was seeking a replacement. The Rockets believed they would add Barkley, creating their star-studded lineup, and knew they would need a PG. They chose Price. I can't say for certain, but you have to think the Rockets declined -- why would Hardaway have passed on the Rockets where he would have started next to Olajuwon, Drexler and Barkley?

According to Patricia Bender, the goddess of NBA Salaries, it was for starting salary of $4.8m (total $15.2)...2nd on the team, more than Mashburn, but Alonzo was over $11m.

    Apparently for 3yrs, because he signed a one-yr in 2000 for $12m...

Nice catch, heypartner... thanks. Correct me if I'm wrong though -- that is a link to the 1997-98 salaries when Hardaway signed back with the Heat in 1996, so the $4.8M would have been his second year take and the overall contract four years (1996-2000, assuming the one-year, $12M in 2000 was his next contract)?

Still, it wasn't the same $$ given to Price since he signed a 7-year deal in the $18 million range, so if the Rockets declined, it may have been partly for $$ reasons.

OK, yeah, I wasn't sure of the starting year. '96-'97. So, that was a starting salary of $2.5m -- odd jump in raise between 1st and 2nd year. So the overall contract was 4yrs? making it $17.7m total.

    http://www.eskimo.com/~pbender/misc/salaries97.txt

    '96-97 = $2.5m
    '97-98 = $4.8m
    '98-99 = $5.6m
    '99-00 = $4.8m

The title of the 2000 NY Times article I linked is: "Heat Re-Signs Hardaway With One-Year Contract"

Some of these guys are def not of note.

While we're on the subject, Rudy T found a ton of random players. He made the CBA (no not the collective bargaining agreement you newbs) his bitch. So much so he won a freaking bronze medal in the Olympics with a CBA team and Brad Miller. That's coaching.

Probably the Rockets figured they needed some 3-point shooters more than anything with Barkley and Olajuwon down low.

Matt Bullard was undrafted in the same draft as Eldridge Recasaner! The Rox signed him as a free agent prior to camp. He has a ring!

Shame on you Jeff for missing the #1 on your list. ;)

Almost had a heart attack. I saw "Out of Nowhere" on the front page with a picture of Moochie.

Thought he passed away or something.

I would have added Sam Mack over Recasner, but that's just me.
