Clippers reportedly interested in Thaddeus Young, possible upgrades at center, guard
By Kurt HelinDec 29, 2019, 1:01 PM EST

Their win over the Lakers on Christmas Day was a reminder that the Clippers are legit title contenders with elite two-way stars — Kawhi Leonard and Paul George — plus a versatile cast around them who can beat teams a variety of ways. This is as good a team as there is in the NBA right now.

Even those Clippers will be looking for upgrades at the trade deadline — with the top teams so tightly bunched, any small advantage gained could be huge in May and June.

Enter this note from Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times.

"Though it is too soon to know whether the Clippers truly have trade intentions, they are sniffing around. NBA sources not authorized to speak publicly believe the Clippers are looking at players like Chicago power forward Thaddeus Young"…

Rival executives believe the Clippers could be on the hunt for another physical center — a potential Finals matchup with Milwaukee or Philadelphia would demand more size — or another playmaking guard.

Rival executives believe the Clippers could be on the hunt for another physical center — a potential Finals matchup with Milwaukee or Philadelphia would demand more size — or another playmaking guard.

The point of Woike’s article is that to get someone like Young, the Clippers would have to surrender Moe Harkless (and a pick, Chicago is young and building), and it’s fair to ask if the upgrade is worth the additional two years of salary? Harkless is in the final year of his contract.

Harkless is a quality, versatile wing defender who can give Leonard and George a break from covering the other team’s best players for a stretch, plus Harkless can hit the three and is popular in the locker room. Young is a solid vet who also would fit the culture, brings and little more size and strength with his strong defense, is a better rebounder and passer, but not as good a shooter from three. Young also is 31 years old with two fully guaranteed years left on his contract after this one.

As for the other positions of interest, there are a lot of teams looking for guards so the price could be high. Another physical center is more likely to be available, likely even on the buyout market.

The Clippers, like the Bucks and Lakers and other contenders, may be checking out moves but will be hesitant to make one because they like what they have. It would need to be a clear upgrade at a position of need. Which most likely means nothing happens, but that will not stop the rumors.

Clippers scout recently attended Bulls game to watch Thaddeus Young
    [IMG]

The Los Angeles Clippers’ interest in Chicago Bulls small forward Thaddeus Young is very real ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline.

According to K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, the Clippers recently sent a scout to watch Young play:

A league source previously confirmed to NBC Sports Chicago that the Clippers’ interest in Young is legitimate, which was first reported by the Los Angeles Times. A Clippers scout attended a recent Bulls game despite the fact the teams don’t meet again until April.

Young is playing 22.4 minutes per game for the Bulls. He’s averaging 9.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 41.8 percent from the field, 34.7 percent from beyond the arc and 59.6 percent from the free-throw line.

The Clippers are looking to bolster their frontcourt depth at the NBA’s trade deadline. Young has playoff experience and is playing on a team-friendly contract. He’s making $12,900,000 this season and owed $13,545,000 in 2020-21. His $14.1 million salary for the 2021-22 season is only $6 million guaranteed.

The Bulls are still alive in the playoff hunt since the back half of the Eastern Conference is really bad. The Clippers, meanwhile, are in fourth place in the West and have a legitimate chance of winning the title this season. They can technically stand pat at the deadline and be fine heading into the second half of the season.

However, if the Bulls give signals they are willing to trade Young, the Clippers should try and acquire him for the right price.

Chicago Bulls: 4 best Thaddeus Young trade destinations
by Andrew Miller22 hours ago Follow @andrewmillerssc

    1. Los Angeles Clippers
The most often discussed trade for the Chicago Bulls to send Thad out of the Windy City involves the Clippers. That aforementioned deal involving Harkless could be beneficial for both sides. Young is definitely going to be put to better use under the direction of head coach Doc Rivers compared to Boylen.

A common narrative in all of these possible trade packages for the Bulls involving Thad have some emphasis on filling a positional need, mostly on the wing. Boylen and the Bulls need a lot of help on the wing, and Harkless is a solid two-way small forward that could still play good minutes once OPJ returns from his foot fracture.

What Young brings to the Clippers is a more stable veteran presence in the frontcourt alongside the likes of center Montrezl Harrell, and the superstar forward combination of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. The Clippers really need an upgrade in the frontcourt rotation beyond the likes of Harrell and the PG-Kawhi duo.
There are more creative trades that the Bulls and Clippers could look into. But both side should keep it simple since Harkless for Young works out well.

Landing Young could be one of those final boosts that the Clippers need to make that elusive run through the West. This will be a difficult run for them in the playoffs out West since they’ll have to work through the Lakers, Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, etc.

Thad Young's skillset would really help the Rockets right now. If he can be had cheaply Morey has to do it, and let PJ get his shoulder healthy.
