If Capela leaves it will be on our terms because he is a restricted free agent. Morey has been pretty consistent on this for non all star players - he lets the market decide how much a player is worth and then he decides if the player is worth the figure we would have to match. I see this playing out similarly. The thing is, there really isn't an equal backup plan out there - Capela is probably the best mobile defensive big men/finishers in the league AND he is still very young. I don't think it's even possible to replace him....but look at Golden State - they really don't play a true center at all so it's not like you HAVE to replace Capela as long as you can find the right players to supplement the productivity lost. Ultimately though - assuming someone doesn't throw the max at Capela, they will probably just match it even if it is more than they want to spend because young productive big men are a relatively rare commodity meaning they could always trade him as long as the contract is somewhat fair.
Hogwash. The pressure is on US to have a plan. What you're implying is if we lose Capela, and end up not being a contender, it's not really on our GM Daryl Morey. Thats ridiculous. If Morey's the genius you think he is, then there's a legit plan in place if we lose Capela. You can't have it both ways
But it hasn't happened yet, so why jump to conclusions and crucify the guy for something that we have zero evidence is actually going to happen? Let's see how this plays out first before we rush to judgment for how Morey is handling the situation.
Damn. It sucks that DJ has already signed with Mavs. I always thought he was our back up plan if Capela left (Deandre would sign for a discount with his hometown rockets). Fingers-crossed we pay Capela what he wants. We need him right now.
Crucify? More like acknowledging the stakes. We praise him for being a genius all the time right? Let's hold him accountable if things fall apart.
It seems more and more likely that Capela could return for lower tender then expected: - LA may be out of contention because of KCP signing - Magic is resigning Aaron Gordon leaving them with little cap room. Same with Mavs/DJ and Suns/Ariza - Hawks, Nets, Bulls still tanking I could see maybe Kings or Knicks maybe extending an offer sheet but I don’t expect it to be a full max. Capela may want to take a less risky path of taking an one year contract or 1+1 this year and going unrestricted next season when the market has more money (especially now that so many major stars will be off of it for 2-3 years). Hopefully he won’t be disgruntled next season and will just use this to fuel another growth period.
So happy the Lakers are effectively out of the Clint race. . They dont have enough money, and I think the sad face was for that. Clint and camp were trying to use Lakers as leverage, and now cant.
I like the way you think. And I’ve always hated “in Morey we trust” BS..... He’s human so he makes mistakes, genius or not!! Plus you can be a genius in only one thing!! Doesn’t make you a know all type.
Exactly... we all lost out collective minds when we missed out on Bosh and Parsons, but we turned out alright.
Sure, but you act like you know he doesn't have a backup plan, when everyone who's ever paid attention to Morey's work knows that he probably has 2 or 3 backup plans. Also, signing Capela to TOO big a contract could be looked at as a "huge blunder" in a year or two.
After LBJ and KCP signings lakers only have around 13mil left in cap space. They are also actively trying to position their assets to facilitate Kawhi trade so wouldn't get too excited about Lakers swooping in on clint unless they waive/stretch Deng's contract. With that in mind the remaining teams with available cap space and in need of a big man pretty much has dwindled down to almost none.... Kings maybe? They desperately need outside shooting though and with Cauley-Stein and Bagley clogging the paint doesnt make a whole lot of sense.... Feeling quietly confident Clint will be a in a rockets jersey next season on a reasonable contract unless morey has something crazy up his sleeve which you can never count out...
But they haven't yet. You may not be crucifying him, but you're hovering over him with nails and have a cross standing by just in case. Let it play out the way it's going to play out, and we can criticize the guy or praise him afterward. But until it happens, maybe chill out and give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Morey has absolutely earned that. He took a team that was in basketball purgatory seven years ago with little to no assets and has gone to the conference finals twice and is coming off a season where the Rockets had the best record in the league and were one half of basketball away from probably winning an NBA championship. Give him a break, maybe?
Exactly. This Capela emoji could be he's disappointed in us. If so, it's on Morey to fix it. If he doesn't, then hopefully he has a plan. If he does not as GM he's failed us. We'll see
I'm simply giving a hypothetical. If everything works itself out then he'll get credit for doing what he does. But if we lose out on Capela, and fail to find a serviceable replacement, then Morey CLEARY didn't think this thing out. There is no middle ground. We don't know the outcome until it happens
This place has some of the worst mood swings I've ever witnessed. LeBron signed in LA... It changes literally nothing. And despite the reports that the "Rockets havent given up on LeBron" I can guarantee you Morey has known about this for a while. While we cant see his plan right now, I guarantee you it will take shape soon.
