Chuck Hayes joins Rockets' staff as personnel scout Former Rockets power forward and fan favorite Chuck Hayes has returned to the team as pro player personnel scout. Hayes, who held a similar position with the Denver Nuggets last season, will continue to evaluate NBA and other players for the Rockets with some work in player development, Rockets vice president Gersson Rosas said. "We value him not only as a player, but his profile and his background is extremely valuable to what we do on the personnel side," Rosas said. "He's a guy who has a different perspective. He's been in the league for 10 years, understands the game. He's a guy that has known for a long time he wanted to do something in the league after his (playing) career was over and prepared accordingly. We see a guy with a lot of talent, a lot of character and a lot of upside in terms of his role in the front office." "He'll still do some player development with us, as the schedule allows," Rosas said. "Long-term he wants to coach. We have a philosophy. A number of the most successful coaches in the league have experience in personnel. When he decides to coach, he'll be better prepared. Being in the D-League, having to make it in the NBA, he'll be very good."
What's funny is he just got done talking about Chuck Hayes a few days ago in one of the classes I visited at USC (just graduated but a few bros hit me up). I have one pic of him sitting at the podium, small classroom with Prof. Fellenzer. Can post later. Will probably make a thread sometime within the coming days on what he said but tidbits right now: - Talked about how huge Battier and Hayes were in 09 - Hayes protected the paint and how numbers couldn't quantify how important they both were. - On CP3 and Harden, "We don't have to tweak a ton. Harden and CP are already playing together so you'll see how it works. We are confident it will work. Chris on the floor while James is off is so much more relieving because last year when James was off it was much more of a liability" - Believes MDA will make CP3 shine. - MELO, when asked about it he just laughed... and said he couldn't talk about it. - Talked about the relief effort and how proud of was of the Rockets brass and everyone working for how they've responded. Praised Houston. That's about it tho.
Damn, I thought as a player! Still cool though, I remember his last stint with us how he was still so smart and valuable in terms of passing, positioning and knowing plays even in his 1st game. Unfortunately, McHale / J.B. was our coach and didn't know how to use him and mindbogglingly didn't play him.
Great, nothing but respect for Chuck, also nice move by the Rockets, we're lucky to have such a good organization.
Battier back on the Rockets as a staff would be absolutely amazing. He is by far one of sharpest and most intelligent players to ever play on the Rockets, and there is no doubt in my mind he would make an absolutely fantastic coach if he pursued that path. The team consistently plays better whenever he is on the court, and I am sure he'll have the same effect in whatever role he ever considers in the organization.
"with some work in player development" I would hope his 1st job would be to teach Capela how to hold his position in the paint. Welcome back Chuckster!!!
