Because quarterback Matt Schaub has been struggling mightily during the Texans' three-game losing streak, fans want to know about the prospects who could be available at his position in the April 2014 draft.

Before we analyze the quarterback class of 2014, let's be clear about a few things.

For instance, the draft is six months away, and three-fourths of the scouting process has to be completed.

Schaub could remain the starter all season, and the Texans could turn things around and make the playoffs.

If Schaub's slide continues, the Texans have to decide how T.J. Yates and Case Keenum fit in the quarterback picture.

Now, if the Texans do decide they need to use a high pick on a quarterback, there could be a lot of talented candidates. Depending on how many juniors and redshirt sophomores enter the draft, this could be the deepest quarterback class in a long time.

Where the Texans finish could have a lot to do with their decision.

The Texans won't have a chance to select the best prospect, Louisville junior Teddy Bridgewater. He's so talented he's supposed to go to the first team that needs a player at his position - probably within the top two spots. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that he'll declare for the draft.

Clemson's Tajh Boyd appears to be the best senior quarterback. Right behind him among the seniors is LSU's Zach Mettenberger, who's being coached by longtime NFL offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

Familiar name in Carr

Other top senior prospects behind Boyd and Mettenberger are Miami's Stephen Morris, Georgia's Aaron Murray, Fresno State's Derek Carr and Alabama's AJ McCarron.

Three of the most interesting prospects are redshirt sophomores who have amazing talent - UCLA's Brett Hundley, Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel.

The NFL can't comment on underclassmen, and scouts aren't supposed to be evaluating them at this point, but they believe Manziel is sure to enter the draft.

Manziel's lack of ideal height isn't as significant as it used to be because the NFL is becoming a league for mobile quarterbacks. He'll be the most scrutinized prospect because of his off-the-field issues, but there's no denying his big-play ability.

A team looking to use a high pick on a quarterback shouldn't be disappointed in April, especially if the most talented underclassmen come out.

This year's draft wasn't a good one to locate a QB. Buffalo's EJ Manual was the only prospect selected in the first round.

But Geno Smith, a second-rounder chosen by the Jets, has already engineered three game-winning drives, including Monday night's march at Atlanta, to propel New York to a surprising 3-2 record.

For fans and media, there's nothing like a quarterback taken high in the draft to elevate excitement.

Because so many young quarterbacks are excelling in their first and second seasons, it's tempting for teams to draft - and play - them immediately.

Smith, Andrew Luck (Indianapolis), Russell Wilson (Seattle), Robert Griffin III (Washington), Colin Kaepernick (San Francisco), Andy Dalton (Cincinnati), Ryan Tannehill (Miami) and Terrelle Pryor (Oakland) are among the young quarterbacks solidifying starting positions for their teams.

Mold practically broken

Dalton, Luck, Wilson and Griffin led their teams to the playoffs as rookies. Kaepernick helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in his second season, his first as a starter.

An early look at possible candidates for next year's draft shows the best prospects come in all shapes and sizes, but they have something in common: terrific skill sets combined with the intelligence to make them appealing to general managers and coaches as first-year starters.

Fans watching the Texans over the last 11 games should also be keeping a close eye on college football and the quarterbacks jockeying for position to be selected behind Bridgewater.

1. Teddy Bridgewater, 6-3, 205, Jr., Louisville: This pocket passer with mobility has everything the scouts look for in a possible top pick.

2. Brett Hundley, 6-3, 222, Soph., UCLA: He's got splendid size, an impressive arm, terrific skills and is loaded with potential.

3. Marcus Mariota, 6-4, 212, Soph., Oregon: His stock is on the rise because he's so gifted and continues to show improvement.

4. Tajh Boyd, 6-1, 225, Sr., Clemson: He's a winner who has experience and has specialized in making big-time plays.

5. Johnny Manziel, 6-0, 210, Soph., Texas A&M: Incredible runner and improviser who has improved tremendously as a passer.

6. Zach Mettenberger, 6-5, 235, Sr., LSU: A classic pocket passer who has excelled under new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

7. Stephen Morris, 6-2, 218, Sr., Miami: If he continues to develop the way he has been, it'll be hard to find a weakness.

8. Derek Carr, 6-3, 215, Sr., Fresno State: The younger brother of David Carr has the smarts and big arm the scouts like to see.

9. Aaron Murray, 6-1, 208, Sr., Georgia: He's a dynamic team leader who's tough and has a good arm and sound mechanics.

10. AJ McCarron, 6-3, 215, Sr., Alabama: He's won national titles playing the most important position under Nick Saban.
