[CHRONIC] Houston sports radio ratings decline from a year ago

I cannot help but think Lopez sounds just like a hispanic Homer Simpson.

 

I really miss Matt and rossy for the lunch time.

 

I have really grown to hate John Lopez. I remember when he said tom Brady was done two seasons ago after starting 2-2, he ended up winning the super bowl that year lol.

What really gets on my nerves is when that Mexican caller calls up the station and says "Oralle Lopez!" And Lopez tries to act all cool like "HEY!" I always cringe when I hear it.

 

After living in Dallas for a few years I started listening to the Ticket. I don't even live in Dallas any more and still listen to them.

They are so much better than anything Houston has on so many levels. The hardline may be the funniest show on radio.

 

I used to listen to the ticket when I lived in Dallas 10 - 12 years ago. The funny thing is that it appears to be the same lineup as it was back then. Musers, Hitzgis, BAD radio, hardline. A lineup that consistent and steady is impressive compared to anything we have here in Houston.

 

Do the Houston sports stations still do caller driven sports talk? If so that explains a lot. The sports stations in Dallas got way from doing caller driven sports talk years and years ago. They actually take the time to plan out each segment and sometimes never take calls.

 

I would disagree with this big time. NBA Playoffs, NHL Playoffs, NFL Free Agency and the Draft. This is actually one of the better times to talk sports. Lots of hot topics.

 

Yeah, the only real change has been pairing Donovan with Norm. They do tend to shift the hosts/shows around a lot in Houston and the non-Ticket Dallas shows. I hated listening to Dallas sports radio, but I don't mind listening to BAD radio and the Hardline now. I'll even try and catch the Ticket Top 10 at nights if I'm driving around in the evening. When I'm working from home, I still stream 790 just because I'd rather try and follow Houston sports talk.

Agree about Lopez but McLain has no idea what he is talking about. Used to tune in when he called in but he has zero inside information and is wrong way more times than he is right.

He was on the other day and literally wouldn't speak about any draft prospect outside of Coleman and Billings (Baylor kids). He literally just said "nope" to any guy Nick or John mentioned other than those 2. Terrible radio.

 

Hard to engage people on NHL playoffs in a city where there isn't a common interest to align around.

Local sports radio typically goes as the local teams do. The summers where the Astros were awful and CSNHouston couldn't get on the airl were terrible for sports radio.

 

Commercial are pretty unbearable. I still listen to Matt Thomas, but I do so later in the day on podcast w/o commercials. That being said, Lance Z has been killing Matt and Sports RV's vibe, his show worked so much better as a single host w/ sidekick.

other than that, no one worth listening to regularly. I won't listen to national shows, all dumb hosts and I only care about my teams and local talk. So I basically only listen to music or podcasts now

Sadly, Houston has never had anything close to the Ticket and never will. I pretty much hate all Dallas sports team but I enjoy listening to the Ticket every time I go up there.

I think you nailed it. Planning out segments on a daily basis is hard work and requires off-the-air thought and preparation. Most guys on sports radio in Houston come across to me as lazy. Few exceptions.

 

Out of all those topics, only the draft would spark a semblance of intrigue around here... And to be honest, the average Houston sports fan who calls into sports radio is really not all that knowledgable about the top college prospects.

As max said, sports radio is the most active when the teams are playing well. The Astros are still in its infancy of being considered a good team, so it will take some time before airwaves are exploding after critical losses (as most people discuss more with losses vs wins).

 

Dying format.

 

I'm pretty sure ratings are less and less relevant now. They reflect the 50+ yo demographic and those people would listen to paint drying if that's what 610 was playing around the clock.

Younger people are increasingly using the various radio apps like Iheartradio for streaming on demand programs, and none of that gets factored into the Nielsen analysis. In fact, the very concept of listener driven radio is probably gonna die in the next 10-20 years, as the vast majority of knowledgeable fans will communicate with hosts via Twitter or not at all as they are listening in podcast form rather than live. The only people who call in these days are uneducated truckers and the like. Palillo's fine with that: all the easier he can mow them down in a debate.

610 is doing none of this stuff. You can go to their website and click for selected podcasts of the day, but there is a really sparse inventory of past podcasts and no app interface to speak of that I can find. Because of its lack of foresight for where radio is going, I guarantee you that 610 is not going to be top dog for long if it even is currently. Rich Lord checked out about ten years ago: all the sports happen past his bedtime, and for some reason 610 has found itself unable to get rid of him. He's like their Kevin McHale: must have politicked his way into indispensible status, using the default good ratings of being the Texans' flagship station afternoon show to justify keeping his job.
