I think we can attribute a lot of this to the fact that the average age of our team is 24 or so. It's pretty obvious that we're not going to compete for a championship this year, but I think with more experience and a second superstar, we can be scary in a few years.

I didn't check the halfcourt defense stats, but this statement is quite surprising. We are #1 defense keeping opponents out of the paint, and 6th in points allowed per halfcourt possesion??

Not horribly shocking. We allow a lot of 3 pointers (2nd most efficient shot in basketball outside of shooting at the rim).

It sounds like they need to work on closing out the perimeter, though it is *REALLY* hard to do both. It's why spacing is such a big issue offensively.

The difference there is related to pace. We're one of the highest pace teams in the NBA.

Looking back, doesnt it seem like players have lost their man a lot on the perimeter? Can someone pull up these stats for contested and uncontested threes compared to opponents 3pt. percentage? Should be an interesting thing to see. If rockets are allowing 121.4 points per 100 possessions in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock, wonder how many of those are perimeter shots?

Data for number of contested vs uncontested shots are NOT available through public data sources though I do believe they're tracked through some of the proprietary statistical sources (for alot of money).

As for the types of shots teams are shooting against us...

League average FG attempts per game and %age by distance

    At the Rim - 25.5/63.8%
    3-9 Feet - 9.1/38.3%
    10-15 Feet - 6.1/40.5%
    16-23 Feet - 19.1/37.8%
    3pt line - 20.0/35.5%

    Attempts per game/FG% - 79.8/44.6%
    TS% - 53.0

    %perimeter (16-23 feet + 3pt%) - 48.99%
    %3 pt attempts - 25%

Houston Opponent average FG attempts per game and %age by distance

    At the Rim - 26.6/65.9%
    3-9 Feet - 9.8/34.9%
    10-15 Feet - 6.4/48.4%
    16-23 Feet - 19.6/40.2%
    3pt Line - 22.3/38.9%

    Attempts per game/FG% - 84.7/46.5%
    TS% - 54.6%

    %perimeter (16-23 feet + 3pt%) - 49.4%
    %3p attempts - 26.3%

From what I can see, opposing teams take *slightly* more shots at the 3pt line, slightly less shots in 16-23 range, but score more than average in both ranges.

Whether that's due to a small sample size or contested/uncontested is hard to say at this point.

Thanks for the look up torocan, your posts are always appreciated. After 20 games so far, im sure the coaches are attempting to fix things on D. It doesnt help that the Rockets Defense seems to get worse as the game goes on. Certain key plays in the end they might step up and put out on, but overall its painful sometimes to watch. How effective are 3pt shots within the first ten seconds? If their getting back into court on time to setup decent D, and we're the top in keeping them out of the paint, is that help defense losing their man at the 3pt line?

we are just too bad defensively, we are giving up tones of points, we are extremely bad at transition D because we TURN it OVER!!!

But also, we are a very bad defensive team on 3s, Ala Mayo and Neal........

High pace game, 3pt shooting and attack rim offense, bad perimeter defense, sounds more like James Harden.
