So how exactly does that phone call go?

    “Uh, Kevin? It’s Daryl.’

Somewhere in that conversation, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey would have to let Kevin Martin know what time practice starts today.

The trade that Morey had in place to revamp the team was killed on Saturday when the Lakers decided they had enough of it. (They also decided they would just go after Dwight Howard instead, which is probably a nice choice to have.)

Instead of sending Martin and Luis Scola to New Orleans, the Rockets will bring both back to the team because they have no choice. The Hornets will have to keep shopping Chris Paul, with David Stern in the role of the league’s most meddling owner. And the Rockets will have to pick up the pieces with the team knowing Morey and Leslie Alexander wanted major changes and probably still do.

If Kevin McHale thinks this is a nightmare for a coach, it could be worse. He could still be a GM caught in this mess.

This is why Stern’s action on Thursday was so entirely heavy-handed and improper, regardless of whether someone loved or loathed the deal itself.

One would think, since the NBA owns the Hornets, it might have heard of this Chris Paul guy and might have even gotten wind that he was going to bolt the team as a free agent after the season.

Yet, Stern did not get around to letting the Hornets know he would stomp a deal until after it was made. While toying with the players involved, Stern wasted massive amounts of work that goes into making a deal like this because he decided he knew better than the GM in charge of the Hornets. And in the Rockets’ case, he wrecked their rebuilding and free agency plans.

The Rockets were paying a heavy price to get Gasol and the cap maneuver they hoped to use to land Nene. But that only demonstrates how important the Rockets considered this move to be.

Now, they don’t have the cap room to get Nene and have already lost Chuck Hayes, and likely the chance at other options they could have pursued had they not been assuming the rules of making trades in the NBA would not be changed on them.

As furious as Morey has to be, Rockets owner Leslie Alexander ought to have every right to rip into Stern until the phones can take no more. Again, regardless of what anyone thinks of the trade itself, the Rockets had a right to make a trade and to be treated as fairly as anyone else.

The commissioner is not supposed to favor one team over another. Stern, however, took an action that he clearly said he believed would benefit one team, unconcerned with the detriment to another.

The Hornets will eventually move Paul, though it might be difficult to get a haul equal to the one Stern turned down. The Lakers will be just fine, and will probably reposition themselves to go after Howard.

The Rockets are left with the same team they had last season, minus Chuck Hayes and their plans to fill a void in the middle. Today, Morey and McHale have to begin putting things back together. It will take more than a few awkward phone calls.

It's just BS. They keep saying that the reason for the lockout was to help small-market teams compete, but you know what? That's a load of crap. The reason for the lockout was to agree on a new CBA. This trade satisfied the rules of said CBA. If the new CBA still isn't fair enough for the small-market franchises, then it's the owners' GD fault for not waiting the players out for an even better deal.

Dell Demps was given autonomy to run the Hornets. He agreed to the best trade he could find, under difficult circumstances. And because the NBA wanted to send a message, the Hornets are going to lose Paul for nothing, our offseason plans have been scuttled, and if the Lakers manage to grab Howard the big-market team will come out of this mess in the best shape.

    BS.

Stern is an idiot who has no business in making a judgment call such as this one. I really hope that this black eye he dealt to the NBA, makes his life parallel to that of Steve Bartman from this point forward

**** stern for being a spineless fool.

What was the next best thing they could get for cp3? Rondo and Jeff ****ing Green?? LMAO. The 3-team trade was the best one they got.

He would love that, he already thinks he's the new King of No Rings and knows how to run an NBA club better than anyone apparently. People don't follow the NBA because of you David Stern, get over yourself. He's just as bad as referees like Joey Crawford, who over-dramatize their fundamentals when making a call, thinking that they are the main part of the spectacle people came to see.

And here's the really funny part out of all this. Chris Paul is gonna end up on the Lakers anyway. My prediction is the Lakers will get Dwight Howard this year and CP3 next year.

Here's why Stern blocked the trade:

    2 words.
    Dwight Howard

Once Stern heard the Rockets planned on using the additional cap space they'd receive to sign NeNe, he stopped the trade. He knows Morey is all about money ball, and the last thing he wants is an overpaid, injury prone center. But if that center gives the Rockets even a 5%-10% chance at helping them land Dwight Howard in a deal, Les is all for it. The Lakers might have figured that out and they didn't care because they would have had Paul. At least this way they have a chance of really contending (against Miami). I digress. Once Stern heard about this, he stopped the trade and used any excuse he could find. He knows this is a great deal for the Hornets, and that a better deal is highly unlikely. Stern wants Howard to end up in Brooklyn. Dwight could really put basketball on the map in that city.

The last thing Stern wants is Dwight ending up in Houston and winning a championship next to Gasol, Budinger, Lowry, and Lee.

This isn't on Stern. it's obvious that he's lost control of the league, and is simply following orders. If you want to place blame, start with small market owners who killed the trade out of spite, because they still aren't happy with the new CBA.

I seriously think the league is heading towards a break up.

Yeah, like how the Spurs won all those championships. Stern wanted to put San Antonio on the map.

Bottomline: this will put us back for years. This was Morey's grandest plan yet. Now it's gone. This kind of opportunity will not come again for a while.

    Chris Paul should SUE!!!!

I hope Chris Paul sues, because this goes against everything the owners and players agreed upon in the new CBA. This is about small market owners (Dan Gilbert) trying to keep their star players (LeBron James) from leaving small markets teams.

Scola wil be fine, but I believe Martin will have to be moved. Personally, I don't blame him. Who wants to be somewhere where they don't believe you have the ability to help then as much as someone else?

No, that happened in 2006. This is just the continuation of a long series of Rockets' misfortunes with more queued up for the years ahead.

When will you guys ever wake up? Every single move morey has made and the justification for doing so...only to make a move that totally contradicts it.

Dude sucks when it comes to players, not only has he ****ed our team chemistry over (especially last season) but he's already turned us into the semi clippers, a team with no glue and lack of desire to win.

We needed guys like battier and hayes. We had no talent to begin with. Its not a pure numbers game.

Exactly. I don't know if everyone else has been playing the denial game and are just way too caught up in it.

These are the same guys that weighted an entire season on Yao's foot, after 5 straight years of injuries. Ignorance never gets a free pass in my book. I remain quiet and avoid the garm most of the time but it sucks when you care about the team and they just keep shooting themselves in the foot (no pun intended).

Ask Horry & Bullard how that worked out.
