Rockets move step closer to retaining Carl Landry

The Rockets extended a qualifying offer to restricted free agent forward Carl Landry on Sunday.

The 6-9 rookie out of Purdue averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in playing 711 minutes in his first pro season.

According to the league’s collective bargaining agreement, the qualifying offer establishes the Rockets’ right of first refusal. Restricted free agents may sign an offer with any team, but the Rockets have the ability to match any offer to Landry.

The one-year contract Landry signed last October called for a team option of $711,000 for next season. The Rockets will have only the mid-level exception (expected to be roughly $6 million) to offer to free agents while staying under the luxury tax.

Landry broke into the Rockets rotation at mid-season and played a key role in extending the club-record 22-game winning streak after Yao Ming was lost for the season with a broken bone in his foot.

But Landry suffered a bruised and swollen right knee in a game against Indiana on March 5, missed seven games and was not able to return to his previous form, with the exception of one game, in the playoffs.

The Rockets selected 6-7, 265-pound forward Joey Dorsey out of Memphis with the 33rd overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft. Dorsey, who is expected to compete for a spot in the lineup next season, could be viewed as an insurance policy further injury or against a big outside contract offer to Landry.

Teams can begin contact with free agents on Tuesday, but no contracts can be signed until July 9.

Irrelevant. It's merely a minimum offer that gives the Rockets control. Landry will sign a multi-year deal with the Rockets or another team. If he signs with another team, the Rockets can match the offer and keep him. One problem is the Rockets can only match up to the MLE.

From my understanding of Morey's words last season, no team can offer Landry more than the MLE since that's the most the Rockets would be able to pay themselves.

I guess 8~12 millions for 3 years is reasonable.

Since they have made a qualifying offer,am I right in assuming it's not related to the LLE?

the question is what we have to sign two drafts if we have to match the full MLE offer other teams give to landry. I really doubt we are going to match w/ the max MLE.

rox quality offer just made landry a restricted free agent officially. if you don't offer a quality contract by July 1, a restricted free agent will become a unrestricted free agent. so what rox did today actually gave itself more leverage to do sth later on. so how much the quality offer is doesn't mean much. there is a rule on how much is the quality offer compared to the last year landry salary. I can't remember the %. you can search online.

What does that mean? It sounds like they were saying he has a team option on his contract.

No,the Rockets didn't pick up the team option.Their only choice is to sign him to either the MLE or the LLE.

I don't think any team is going to offer him the entire MLE

Yes, its a win-win for us.

Any team that signs him for more than that is completely stupid. The old carl before the injury you could argue about...but due to his health you can't.

I am glad an offer was made. Hopefully Landry will accept it and not wait for offers from other teams.

The Bucks might. They need a starting PF and Landry is a hometown boy.

In order to make their free agent a restricted free agent, a team must submit a qualifying offer to the player by June 30. The amount of the qualifying offer for players on rookie "scale" contracts is based on the player's draft position. The qualifying offer for all other players must be for 125% of the player's previous salary, or the player's minimum salary plus $175,000, whichever is greater. The qualifying offer must be for one season. A player can elect to accept his qualifying offer (the qualifying offer must be accepted by March 1) and play the following season under its terms. This is sometimes done in order to become an unrestricted free agent the following summer.

When another team wants to sign a restricted free agent, it signs the player to an offer sheet, the principal terms of which the original team is given seven days to match. The offer sheet must be for at least two seasons (not including option years). If the player's prior team also submitted a maximum qualifying offer, then the offer sheet must be for at least three seasons (not including option years). If the player's original team exercises its right of first refusal by matching the principal terms of the offer sheet, the player is then under contract to his original team. If the player's original team does not exercise its right of first refusal within seven days, the offer sheet becomes an official contract with the new team.

Just please don't overpay him. If he demands full MLE, let him walk.

Just hope he'll accept the offer. There are a few teams which are under the cap and may offer MLE to him to screw us up.
