I'm sure it has NOTHING to do with it being a prime time ESPN game. :)

Clemens to make another home start Sunday

Future Hall-of-Famer told McLane he'd consider pitching on short rest, and he will

Roger Clemens will start Houston's home finale against St. Louis on Sunday.

"The Rocket is going to come back," manager Phil Garner said Thursday night after the Astros' 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Before leaving Minute Maid Park on Wednesday evening, Roger Clemens approached Astros owner Drayton McLane and said he'd consider pitching in the club's final home game of the season Sunday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

"He reported he feels pretty good and he feels he can do it," Garner said. "The other thing is, we have to do as good as we can against St. Louis."

Clemens threw six scoreless innings Wednesday to beat the Cincinnati Reds before a crowd of 31,928, which gave him multiple standing ovations, including a 90-second one that drew a curtain call and a salute from the future Hall of Famer.

Because starting pitchers take four days of rest between starts, Wednesday afternoon was considered Clemens' last scheduled start at home. The Astros will finish the season with a seven-game trip through Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Atlanta.

Clemens has not given any indication if he'll consider pitching next year, which would be his 24th in the majors and fourth with his hometown Astros.

He's 7-5 with an impressive 2.37 ERA over 17 starts since joining the Astros on June 22. He signed on May 31 and made three minor-league starts before rejoining the club.

"I was giving a speech today, and I mentioned that Roger Clemens has as much presence as any leader I've met," McLane said. "He knows what he means to the city and the team, and this just shows his leadership."

Clemens earned his 348th victory Wednesday afternoon. Because Sunday's game is at night and Wednesday's game was in the afternoon it would be more like three and a half days of rest instead of four or three.

    Good, good.

Sunday's game against St. Louis is not only a night game (Minute Maid Park will more likely be packed than Wednesday's game vs. Cincy) but the game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

i'll go out on a limb here and say a perfect game for clemens in his final home start.

i wonder how many times a HOF has ended his career with a perfect game?

i'm sure it's happened dozens of times.

I'll go out on a limb and say he leaves in the 4th with a groin pull.

His final home start this year won't be the last start of his career, unless he gets hurt.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the headline. Of course, I prefer the perfect game.

He needs two more wins and he was going to get 2 more starts regardless if he started Sunday or Monday.

He probably didn't want to fly to Philadelphia for a Monday start. :)

You could be right, and he can still bring it. Do you think he will pitch again next year?

What's ridiculous about it? If you already had tickets to the game, who would you rather see pitch? Sampson, Wandy, Hirsch, or Roger Freaking Clemens?

    Sometime "establishment-hating" gets pretty ridiculous.
