    New assistant joins staff
Finch coached Rockets affiliate in NBA D-League
Well, it's official. He was added, but it doesn't sound like he's in the top assistant position. He also helped with working out draft prospects. There are more interviews planned for next month.

    Thoughts?

We must lock up Joerger as the lead assistant.

I was hoping we'd go after Quin Snyder too, but it looks like he wants the high-profile gig in LA.

Yeah, Joerger is my favorite for lead assistant, also. That might have a lot to do with not knowing many of the other choices, though.

Finalizing this coaching staff has taken quite a bit longer than I thought it would take.

It seems a little awkward for the GM to be selecting the assistant coaches.

I don't find it awkward at all. I know that the old school way of doing things is for the head coach to hire the assistants. But the team pays their salaries, not the head coach. So if the GM wishes to micro-manage the hiring of the coaching staff, so that all coaches hired fit the FO's new direction moving forward, then I'm all for it.

It would be no different from a director hiring a somewhat inexperienced department manager with the understanding that he will also hire the personnel for the department, while still getting his input in the hirings.

After all, it's not as if the GM is the only person doing the hiring here. McHale is in on the interviews for hiring his lead assistant.

Here's what Feigen said when I asked about the assistant coach situation:

i would be VERY happy with sampson or joerger as the top assistant coach / defensive coordinator. cassell or elie would be great as the 3rd assistant.

Assistant coaches are like draft picks. I'll only be happy if we get the ones I'VE read about. Nevermind that I know next to nothing about their qualities as a coach or if those translate over to our group. I want to be able to approve of the hiring and feel like I did my research. After all, I read the local newspaper and I've seen them sitting on another teams bench during timeouts which are both huge in-depth sources of information for my special rigorous informed fan evaluation. Pfffffffffffffffffffft.

Here's what I know. He is an x's and o's coach who has had success everywhere he's been. He has been running Rick Adelmans offense at Rio Grand Valley for the last two seasons and will theoretically be tasked with running that offense for the Rockets now.

As much as anything I am glad the Rockets intend on keeping that offense.

Theoretically they want Jeorger to run the defense. All second hand info tho so take it for what it's worth.
