Van Gundy refutes report that he and GM don't talk

    By JONATHAN FEIGEN
    Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy was checking his e-mails while talking on the phone with general manager Carroll Dawson on Sunday when one message caught his eye.

Van Gundy received a blurb from a New York Post column that said he and Dawson were no longer on speaking terms.

The irony of the timing of this news aside, Van Gundy on Monday sought to end any doubt.

"The funny thing was at the time somebody e-mailed it to me, I was talking to Carroll," Van Gundy said. "I just found it funny. I wasn't going to bring it up.

"Anonymous (information) like that is the old divide and conquer. I don't respond to those, but this time I thought I should clear it up. Things like this try to make you defend things that don't need defending. It's like (the question), 'Do you still beat your wife.' "

While saying he and Dawson speak "not every day but almost all the time," Van Gundy also disputed the insinuation that he was unhappy with the personnel Dawson provided. He said it is inaccurate to say that Dawson and he did not make personnel decisions together.

"He doesn't tell me about every phone call, nor do I want him to," Van Gundy said. "I don't run every coaching decision by him. But we make every major decision together. I didn't wake up one morning and Tracy McGrady was here. I don't think that happens anywhere.

"Do I have enough say? Absolutely."

I think pwned originated from counter strike. Someone misspelled owned and it just caught on.

    here's my understanding,

owned -> mistyped since "o" and "p" are close: pwned, then as the internet often does overplays it, so put both letters in but use some hacker typing, or you have fat fingers, the "0" is close to the "p":

    p0wned

maybe just another typo, hence further propgating the overplaying of a typo

it happens to look like hacker typing, so change it to:

    p0wn3d

    it just keeps going...

    much like this one:

    ZOMG!!!111!!ELEVENTYONE!!

    yeah, i think it's r****ded too.

vecsey walks a tightrope....he has to consider exactly what he can make up w/o someone feeling motivated enough to contradict him.

Any time we trade or acquire a player, it's a major decision.

    Vecsey is a douche bag

Why does Vescey even have a job? I was watch NBA TV many times and see Vescey as a host on many of the shows? Why even consider him for the job when he creates such a fake stir in the NBA?

Because he does a good job of generating buzz. Look at how much attention the NY Post and Vecsey received from all of this. Sure, he lied. Sure, he's an ass. But it got a hole bunch of people to say the words "New York Post" and in that sense, he achieved his goal.

Most sports jounalism is complete garbage; however, this kind of irresponsible slander is extreemly reprehensible. Shouldn't Mr. Vescey be held accountable for the lies he prints?

I live in New York, and there are a lot of newspapers in this city. THey can't all write the same thing, but this kind of journalism is not ethical, and it can be damaging. Quite frankly, the NBA should be more proactive about not allowing these kind of lies to be spred by journalists who they employ.

    Bush league.

It's pretty hard to keep that big of a secret. I mean if it were true (that they weren't speaking to each other), I think there'd be a whole lot more of people coming out and saying so. You can't keep that big of a secret.

    You all are all wrong.

Powned is "player owned", it came from Counterstrike. It wasn't a typo.
