I have to keep looking up the new CBA stuff, as well. Can't wait for Coon to update his FAQ. Here's an explanation from LA Times regarding how much more money he can make next year by exercising his Early Termination Option, thus allowing a new max deal to start sooner. http://www.latimes.com/sports/clippers/la-sp-clippers-griffin-contract-20170623-story.html Keys things to note: Normal extensions are limited to 120% of previous salary. That's not good enough for Paul, who is looking at a $12m increase to the new Max. Paul could renegotiate all the way to the max, and extend, but LAC doesn't have the capspace to renegotiate his contract up to the max. Any renegotiated increase must fit under the cap. (no Bird Exceptions, for instance, to go over the cap). So instead, he needs to opt out now, to get that new huge Max Salary starting next year using a Bird Exception. Also, Paul isn't a Designated Player, so doesn't qualify for that extension. That's for 8 or 9 yr players only who are signing with their original drafted team. Keep in mind also that this was all planned by Paul during CBA negotiations, as Player President. Since he's 32 yrs old, a max-length contract would fall under the unfavorable Over-36 rule. He was the main force behind changing that rule to Over-38. He did that, because he is wants the option to sign a 5yr new contract with LAC. Since signing with a different team is limited to a 4yr deal, he didn't need to change the rule for that.
