    Bobcats, Spurs finalizing Ely trade
    RICK BONNELL

Barring a last-minute snag with the league office, the Charlotte Bobcats' Melvin Ely is headed to the San Antonio Spurs, in return for Eric Williams, a 2009 second-round pick and cash compensation.

The Bobcats and Spurs were in a conference call with league officials Tuesday afternoon to finalize the deal. Ely, a 6-9 power forward, requested a trade earlier this season in search of playing time. He's playing on a one-season, $3.3 million contract.

Williams, 6-foot-8, can play either forward spot and is known primarily for his defense. However, he's played little for the Spurs, and his reputation declined in Toronto, where he moped after being traded from the New Jersey Nets.

Williams is making about $4.3 million this season on a contract that expires in July. The Spurs probably will pay the Bobcats the difference in the two contracts. Since the Bobcats are well under the salary cap, they can absorb the additional salary.

The Bobcats extended Ely the one-year qualifying offer with an eye to dealing him. They are loaded with big men, and he was playing behind Emeka Okafor, Sean May, Primoz Brezec and Jake Voskuhl most of this season.

Ely has a gift for low-post scoring, but often fell short of coach Bernie Bickerstaff's expectations as a rebounder and defender.

How is it that the Spurs can always seem to get deals like this done? Great pick-up for them.

Ely is a lazy underachiever so it will be interesting to see if great coaching can help him improve.

    They need help for Bowen.

He can't defend anyone anymore, and his shot is totally off. They miss his consistent 3 pointers and there you have a huge issue for San Antonio.

How does Ely really help the Spurs? I don't see him breaking the rotation of Duncan, Elson, and Oberto. Maybe he steals some time from Horry? Other than that, he is not really better than those other (taller) guys.

exactly. he's not going to help them make a playoff run, or dominate the second half of the season.

he adds to thier depth, but isn't any better than elson or oberto.

nice trade. won't win them any games more games.

They keep him away from us their division rival who happen to be neck and neck with them in the standings. All it cost them was a horse face has been that was rotting on their bench...

He wouldn't have been a zero on this team. For us we missed a chance to get some needed size but for them it's a lateral move at worst...

same here. a guy like ely (next to a reliable backup pg who can shoot the ball) is really what the rockets need to make the step to becoming a real contender.

you can say what you want but since stro was traded we lack athletic ability under the basket. i'm not so sure the team will address this need, though.

I think we have a deeper need for a backup PG than for a backup PF/C, especially with the way Juwan and Deke have been playing. Getting a guy like Ely would only take away minutes from Chuck Hayes, IMO, and I love watching Chuck alongside Yao.

We probably still could re-acquire Haryasz for scratch -- if we have the itch.

Well said. IMO, this is the main reason for the Spurs downfall this season. Bowen has fallen off a cliff and is no longer a positive factor. I bet he announces his retirement after the Spurs are eliminated.

    Damn you Spurs

I wanted him so we could at least have some legitimate size up front. I wouldn't expect any significant impact, but he might've been a useful big man, and young too.

yeah, but he is in a contract year. if pop cant get to him than he will just sit on the bench and ride out the year. its really a no loose situation for the spurs. solid move.

williams wasnt playing anyway, so even if he continues to underachieve, they arent loosing anything. if he works out he is adding a little big man depth, which is always good for the playoffs.
