Capella deserves his 25m when compared to what other centers are making. He especially deserves it because we have a Ryan Anderson on the team making 20M a year doing absolutely nothing. Imagine working with a guy that does nothing but makes 10-15 times more than you. I don't blame Ariza and Luc for bolting.
the irony here is that one of the reasons nobody will pay him what he think's he's worth is because he's just a p***y, both on and off the court. and nobody will give him $25M/yr next summer either. he displays this weak mental all throughout the season against the tougher players, like adams. and he can barely crack 30min a game for the same reason. he flakes on his own event. tweets like a 14yr old girl who got dumped for the first time. and is probably curled up on a bean bag pouting as i type. to get max money he needs to do more than just finish off harden's lobs. he needs to take over games, show leadership, and be a consistent force in the paint every night. and make his ******* freethrows. kerr was running hack-a-capela in game frickin 7 and it worked :X
The problem is Gobert... and i think that's what the Wasserman's group is using as a measuring stick for CC.
Jokic is far worse in Defence and forget switching , Embiid would have missed half the games, Horford can't run up and down like Capela or catch lobs like him. Gobert is much worse offensively, Drummond..lol Whiteside lol. We only focus on Capela's weakness but I dont' see no perfect Center. Also almost all centers get their stats lifted by their pgs.
I'm still bitter about Ariza, the f#ckin' Suns with like 10 wing players, sign Ariza. WTF. Luc, I knew a team was going sign him with his defensive prowess on the wing, possibly overpay for him. When Melo rumors started to pop up, I kinda felt that he might be gone to. Capela could very likely sign a QO, but he's gone after this year. He thinks he's worth more that's player pride, along with his agent getting his best dollar (everyone else does, so why not Clint). If we offer him 20+ MM deal a year, we will basically be in cap hell for minute.
Most of those centers are not all-pro or are often injured. When Mozgov got the 4 yr/64 MM that, kind of set the standard for big men contracts, any center that was marginally better than Mozgov was going to be looking for $18 MM-$20 MM in 2017-2020. $60 is kind of A low ball amount for Clint.
Because he is our 3rd best player and our most important defensive player and the Rockets have no way to replace him with anybody nearly as talented as him and are already dealing with an extremely thin rotation and older roster with essentially zero financial flexibility. BUT OTHER THAN THAT....
2016: Andre Drummond - 5 years, $130 million Dwightmare - 3 years, $70.5 million Al Horford - 4 years, $113 million Hassan Whiteside - 4 years, $98 million Dirk Nowtizki - 2 years, $50 million Ryan Anderson - 4 years, $80 million Bismack Biyombo - 4 years, $72 million Timofey Mozgov - 4 years, $64 million Miles Plumlee - 4 years, $52 million Joakim Noah - 4 years, $72 million Solomon Hill - 4 years, $48 million 2017: Paul Milsap - 3 years, $90 million 2018 Nikola Jokic - 5 years, $147.7 million DeAndre Jordan - 1 year, $22 million Jusef Nurkic - 4 years, $48 million DeMarcus Cousins - 1 year, $5.3 million Nerlens Noel - 1 year, $3.7 million Brook Lopez - 1 year, $3.8 million Dwightmare - 2 year, $10.0 million (was traded for Mozgov on the same contract)
Big men's salaries are super overpaid relative to guards for the same reason that they are constantly drafted in the top 10 (and drafted in general) over guards when their skills don't match. There's just a scarcity of absurdly large humans. Like others have said, the NBA is moving away from these guys, so everyone on that list is vastly overpaid. HOWEVER - Capela is a good modern NBA center because a quick, vertical threat helps space your offense in unique ways. In conclusion, I have no conclusion. We should retain Capela but it's good that we're playing "hard ball" in an INSANE NBA market.
THIS - which makes this comparison dated! You'll start to see big money centers (beyond Brook Lopez, Dwight Howard, Nerlens Noel) take huge haircuts on salary when their contracts expire. I predict that DeAndre Jordan (2019), Adams, Whiteside, Biyombo, Kanter and Noah ALL will take hits on their next deals. Nurkic would have gotten huge money two years ago. Most of those bad big money center contracts are the types we'd get back for Ryno. I don't think we can tie up 20-25% of the long-term cap on Capela, when we've already got 70% of the cap tried up in Harden and CP3. The rest of the roster will be trash (minimum players), and we'll have pure garbage at SF, at PF, and on the bench. We're between a rock and hard place. If it was certain that he would develop post moves, a jump shot and a reliable free throw, it would be a no brainer. We have a short window, so need him...but long term we may put ourselves in a really difficult box if he plateaus at his current level.
Big men have always been overpaid just like left handed pitchers are in MLB. I think the market has said maybe not in this era of small ball dominated play.
Except for the ones with rookie contract, most people that know about NBA will agree the salaries of these centers are overpaid. Most of the teams are just either regret or wanting to get out of those contracts.
VORP just shows how much better Capela is compared to his replacement- Nene. Considering how bad Nene was last year, it doesn’t necessarily mean Capela is super good. I don’t know much about how PER is calculated, but Clint is not top 10 in PER. Bottom line, these advanced stats can be misleading and inflated especially for role players on a good team.
