it would be interesting to our offense with him posting up smaller guards and then dishing out to everyone else as a playmaker.....His D is average now, but i think if he could still post up we could use him depending on what team we're playing
Payton is hardly a upgrade from Sura. He's old and worn down. I don't think he can still post up effectively.
Asking if Payton can "post up" anymore is almost like asking a question that wants to surrender: granted, he posted up better than the average point guard, but what would any team want with a point guard that can post up, especially the Rockets? A point guard that can play like a point guard, that's what I'd like, and at his age, well, I guess the only thing I could ask of Payton now is 'can he post up', 'cause there ain't much else he can do.
Yeah, Payton is still one of the better post-up point guards in the league. And his quick hands and size make him an above-average PG in today's NBA, though that's probably due to the number of really awful point guards on other teams. But yeah, you don't want him, he's washed-up and no better than what you already have.
You're crazy. Did you not see him play with the Celtics last year? Thanks to him they were one of the best teams in the east. When he played with the lakers, he played terrible, but not last year with the celtics.
Also, can anyone tell me why they say Payton has a bad attitude and isn't good in the locker room? It seems like all his teamates always love him and he takes up for them on the court. He has a bad attitude and talks trash to his opposition, because he's competitive, but i've never heard of him being a problem in the locker room or a having a problem with his teamates on the court.
he can't post up smaller guards... but as I said earlier - he can get Chauncy Billups the Finals MVP and he can sit on the bench with a towel on his head and watch his team get blown out by the Pacers !
Payton is an old worn down defensive specialist who thinks he is much better than he really is. I would rather have Sura at the point (if reasonably healthy than Payton) Payton will cause problems because he thinks too highly of himself.IMHO
If Robert Horry doesn't hit all those 3 pointers in game 5 of this years finals, Chauncy Billups would have been MVP again and it would have been on the very young Tony Parker. I remember just about everyone berrating the Mutombo trade last year. Payton may have lost a step, but he is a better pure point guard than Sura or James any day of the week.
Of all the oldie-goldie retreads people want to sign, Payton make the most sense to me -- but only if we can get him for a pittance. PGs don't have to be all that athletic (see: Kidd, Jason), they just have to be smart. And while GP might no longer be a lock-down type of defender, he'd still be a damn good one in a team-oriented scheme like JVG's. Plus, it would be great to have Luther learning how to play the game from a real PG instead of from one of our dozen or so combo guards.
If we could get Payton for cheap, then it would be a no brainer. There is so much talk about him being old and how he is worn down, but he still put up a solid 11 & 6 on a winning team. He isn't the same defensive player he use to be, but when you were the BEST perimeter defender in the game for a while, it's easy to say he isn't as good. Even when he had his worst year in LA, he still gave them 15 & 6. He has also been one of the most reliable players to ever play in this league. If we're not sure Sura can make it through an entire season, Payton would fill in just fine for a year, maybe two. Payton can still shoot the ball, run a break, run a half-court set, and still play good enough defense. If he will come for cheap, then I say sign him up.
How could he possibly post up shorter guards when they are going to be using those new anti-gravity shoes this year?
