I like rooting for underdogs. It's also hard to like the majority of NBA superstars today. I've become a little more cynical after witnessing superstars become more unlikable over time and it sickens me to watch divas orchestrate the show. I hope the CBA's effect begins to take its course soon, because parity at the moment is shot and small market teams outside of the Spurs and OKC (both great at scouting, accumulating picks, and having some luck drafting) have had a hard time competing. In this thread, try to build a fictional championship-competitive NBA team with the least star power.

Some cases I like to look at: 2004 Pistons, 2002 Sacramento Kings, 2007 GSW, Last year's Denver Nuggets

    1. Quiet PER / Advanced Stat Guys: Faried, Ben Wallace, Rodman, Chucky Hayes. Usually high motor, great defensive IQ, positioning guys.

    2. High Beta A-Game Potential: Ty Lawson, Bobby Jackson, Jason Terry, Javale McGee, Harden, entire 2007 GSW squad. Sometimes turn-it on and streaky dominate a game, other times disappear.

    3. All-stat Glue Guys: Shane Battier, Tayshuan, Afflalo, Doug Christie. Two-way players who bring stability and consistency on both ends of the floor for the team.

I actually think last year's Denver Nuggets were the closest team to a championship with the least star power. They had a streaky dominant defensive presence in McGee, a guy who turned up his A-game many notches in Ty Lawson, a high motor PER giant in Faried, and a consistent two-way player in Afflalo. It's too bad Wilson Chandler was injured because Daniela was clearly the weak link.

I'd build a team something like this for 2013:

    Greg Monroe
    Paul Milsap
    Chandler Parsons
    Kawhi Leonard
    Ty Lawson

Greg Monroe and Milsap both placed in the top 20 PER's of last season and would swallow up boards with their reb-rates. Parsons and Kawhi provide length and stability on both ends of the court while covering multiple positions. Ty Lawson would provide the offensive fire power needed in the clutch and stretch out defenses with Kawhi. All these guys can generate 15 pts a night and are a defensive/motor presence. What do you guys think; can this team compete for a championship? How would you build a fictional NBA championship level team with the least star power?

That is probably the worst team that would realistically have a beat the Heat or Thunder I guess you could lose Iggy or Horford and still have a chance but not nearly as good of a chance.

That team has just as many all stars as the one I made, just becasue they havent actually made the all star game doesnt mean they are worse players. Irving is better than any player on my team, Cousins is just as good as Horford, and Davis could possibly turn out better than Bynum.

I thought the point was to pick players that weren't all-stars. If you want to pick bad players you don't have a chance.

What? I didn't say that at all. I wasnt saying that your team had too many good players, I was saying it had just as many as mine did, which you said had too many.

    Irving>>>Iguodala
    Cousins=Horford
    Davis<Bynum (for now)

I think what 713 is subtly saying is that the road to the championship is through the lottery. :p

Are we allowed to use Tmac if we know he's almost recovered and since he's not technically a star anymore?
