    Tis why Melo refuses to be bought out. He keeps the $$$ either way but retains Bird Rights w/a trade. Simple bookkeeping. Macro economics.

    We're hoping to get him via trade because then we have his bird rights. We get him via buyout we can't sign him with no cap space next year

    They cannot trade their 2019 pick but they can trade any pick from 2020 onwards. They maybe more likely to trade those future picks that are 3+ years ahead because of the extension Harden signed.

    I was not aware of that fact. That's very deflating for me to find out cuz I really thought the buyout was more likely than a trade. So a buyout is pretty much guaranteed not to happen. Only teams that he would be able to re-up next year with for good money are the teams that aren't in contention and he would have no interest in joining this year.

    Impossible force meets immovable object.

    Knicks think they have some leverage because they can just go into the season with Melo
    Knicks do not want to take on anderson or another long term contract.

    While Melo only wants to go to Houston.
