Texans centerpiece Boselli has another shoulder surgery

Houston Texans' left tackle Tony Boselli missed his team's weekend minicamp while healing from a pair of shoulder surgeries performed last season. Now he'll have to rehabilitate from yet another shoulder operation.

SportsLine.com has learned that the All-Pro left tackle underwent shoulder surgery Monday in an attempt to accelerate healing on his left shoulder, his second operation on the shoulder in the past seven months.

The shoulder, which underwent a procedure Nov. 7, has not progressed as Boselli would have liked to this point. An MRI conducted over the weekend by team doctors determined that another procedure to clean out scar tissue would be beneficial.

The latest surgery will likely keep him from fully participating in the team's June minicamp and his return date is unclear. Thus, Texans coaches will have to wait even longer to see the first pick in February's expansion draft in action.

Team spokesman Brent Williamson confirmed that such a procedure was performed this morning but had no comment on details or rehab time.

The team has been hoping the massive 6-foot-7, 322-pound blocker would be ready for training camp, but that was before this latest surgery. But the Texans and Boselli agreed to have the surgery to improve his chances of being available for training camp.

Two weeks ago the Texans selected Fresno State quarterback David Carr with the first pick in the NFL Draft. Team brass envisioned an offense where Boselli would personally keep defenders off the draft's No. 1 pick this season. How much longer they have to wait to see Boselli protecting the kid QB remains unclear.

The former Jacksonville Jaguars five-time Pro Bowler originally underwent surgery on his right shoulder on Oct. 15 of last year to repair a torn labrum and clean out loose particles. He was placed on injured reserve one week later. Already out for the season, Boselli took the opportunity to clean up his left shoulder as well. But that shoulder has continued to give him some problems.

Injuries were a major concern when the Texans decided to select Boselli and accept his expensive salary with their No. 1 expansion selection. Two years ago he tore his ACL but returned to the starting lineup for the entire 2000 season. He has also had ankle surgery within the past three years.

When Boselli was left unprotected by Jacksonville, an independent doctor cleared him and believed Boselli would be able to return to action by June 1.

Boselli, also the first pick in Jaguars' history, was exposed to the Texans in order to help rescue the Jags from salary-cap purgatory. He had a projected cap hit for this season of $8.95 million, including $4.5 million in salary and a $2 million March 1 roster bonus. Boselli has earned a reputation from defensive ends and linebackers as the top tackle in the NFL when he is healthy.

Ravens defensive end Michael McCrary said last season that Boselli is the only tackle in the league who has a stance that he is unable to read before the play. Other top pass rushers also admitted that Boselli is the toughest tackle in the NFL to bull rush.

Houston general manager Charley Casserly has done a stellar job of building a strong blocking wall in front of his high-priced young quarterback. Without Boselli, however, their wall is missing one huge block.
