Anti-Kremlin leader Boris Nemtsov fatally shot in Moscow

Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was shot and killed Friday in the shadow of the Red Square only two days before he was to speak at an major anti-Kremlin rally.

Putin quickly condemned the killing and took person control of the investigation, according to his spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Nemtsov, 55, was shot four times form a passing car as he was walking across a bridge in central Moscow.

At least seven shots were fired at him,

Interfax, quoting unidentified sources, says Nemtsov's death "appears to be a contract killing."

The Russian interior ministry said Moscow police were attempting to detain the killers, Interfax said.

Ilya Yashin, one of Nemtsov's colleagues in the RPR-Parnassus party, confirmed his death, the BBC reports.

"Unfortunately, I can see the corpse of Boris Nemtsov in front of me now," he was quoted as saying by Russia's lenta.ru news website. "At the Bolshoy Zamoskvoretsky Bridge. I see the body and lots of police around it."

State TV stressed that Nemtsov was slain while walking "with a young woman who was born in Kiev," the capital of Ukraine, Agence-France Presse tweeted. Russian-backed rebels have been battling Ukrainian troops for control of eastern Ukraine.

Nemtsov was touted as one of the earlier young economic reformers, winning the post of governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in 1991 at the age of 32.

He had served as first deputy prime minister under the late President Boris Yeltsin, was co-chair of the RPR-PARNAS political party and one of the leaders of anti-Kremlin Solidarnost movement in Russia.

Does anyone NOT think that Putin is in some way behind this?

Putin is a monster - a cold blooded murderer. Politkowskaja, Litwinenko, and all the nameless people he has had killed already. Sad.

Putin "taking control of the investigation" means that either no one will be found who did the deed, or some innocent soul will get charged with the murder, in my humble opinion.

Pretty stupid for Putin to do it or clear it in advance of the planned protest against him. I fail to see how he benefits. On the other hand, if you did to turn a planned protest violence so that Putin would crack down on it, it seems like a good target.

Either way, no matter who did it or why, nothing good will come. Best of luck to the Russian people.

Tens of thousands of mourners are marching in Moscow today to protest the murder of Nemtsov. His murder was clearly a professional hit job. Anyone who saw the video clip given out by the Kremlin (so where are the other video feeds, Putin?), saw that the timing was exceptional. A big street cleaning vehicle goes in front of the camera right when Nemtsov was shot, a car is there to pick up the shooter, and we are being told by the government that it's likely that the "opposition" killed the man in order to "foment revolution." The absurdity of that statement goes beyond the pale.

    Exactly.

Especially when you consider what happened to Litwinenko, Politkowskaja, Pussy Riot, Estemirowa, Magnitski, Beresowski, Nawalny, Udalzow, Chodorkowski, Markelow, Baburowa - all murdered or put in jail.

Putin is a cold-blooded murderer. Anyone who opposes him is at risk of getting murdered. Putin is pure evil.

And the crazy thing is that it works for him - his approval rates in Russia are really high. Even Russian taxi drivers in Berlin tell me his propaganda straight up. It's unbelievable.

Just to give a timeline, ATW, for those who don't closely follow international news:

    Violent deaths of Putin opponents

April 2003 - Liberal politician Sergey Yushenkov assassinated near his Moscow home

July 2003 - Investigative journalist Yuri Shchekochikhin died after 16-day mysterious illness

July 2004 - Forbes magazine Russian editor Paul Klebnikov shot from moving car on Moscow street, died later in hospital

October 2006 - Investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya shot dead outside her Moscow apartment

November 2006 - Former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko died nearly three weeks after drinking tea laced with polonium in London hotel

March 2013 -Boris Berezovsky, former Kremlin power broker turned Putin critic, found dead in his UK home

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-31677506

All murdered, and no one has ever been caught. What a surprise!
