I'm not a fan of Beyonce's music, but I think she's hot and I respect a local girl making it big. My sisters have told me before about Beyonce stealing ideas for performances from other artists. I get that the producer screwed this girl over, but it's messed up that Beyonce's dad is trying to get Beyonce to be listed as the writer of the song.

Anyways, I saw this on WWTDD:

It's been reported many many times in the past that Beyonce and her team of mangers are creatively challenged, so they often resort to stealing material and ideas from others who came before them or from new singers and songwriters who have no power to stop them. Oh hey have you heard her new song, "If I Were A Boy"? Fox News says...

The story behind "If I Were a Boy" is absolutely scandalous … the young woman who wrote the melody and lyrics had no idea Beyonce had even recorded her song until a stranger called with the news. By then, it was too late.
BC Jean is a hot, up-and-coming, 21-year-old female singer songwriter from San Diego. Those who’ve met her says she’s smart and "gorgeous" (but) she and her manager/mother have been strong-armed by Beyonce’s people and others who saw gold in "If I Were a Boy" and didn’t care how they got it.
BC Jean wrote and recorded about a dozen songs with German pop-factory producer Toby Gad for an album … when the deal fell apart, Gad took the songs and started marketing them to big name, established artists.
When I wrote about Beyonce’s version of "If I Were a Boy" last week … plenty of people knew the saga of Beyonce’s manager/father Mathew Knowles’ aggressive pursuit of the publishing rights to the potential hit record. His goal was to get the rights to the song and to put Beyonce’s name on the writing credits.

I don't get why the law is so helpless in situations like this. Beyonce raped this girl and is gonna get away with it because she's rich. Not literally of course. I shouldn't have said "rape". People throw that word around too loosely, IMO. Especially the prosecutors in my case. Why can't we call it, "an unrequited love affair". See? Doesn't that sound better?

it sounds so not like any r&b songs. and it's on that girl's website. she wouldn't be so dumb to do a cover without giving credit. her stuff would've got taken down long time ago.

That is absolute rubbish, ...that girl should sue the heck out of her....and have some good girl on girl action recorded and put up on YouTube as punishment for her crimes.

The Knowles have come to terms with BC Jean though. She has gotten some publicity and seems to have a bright future. It looks like somebody will sign her.

The reason for the push for a writing credit is for royalty payments from radio plays. If the Performance Royalty Act goes through, that would allow performers to get royalty payments from radio plays also.

I am glad there is a happy ending and hope she makes it big.

The Carlsons, I’m told, recently came to terms with Beyonce, after enduring the kind of record biz terrors that would curl the hair of the guys from "Hit Men." Now, "If I Were a Boy" is hitting big time. Part of the deal, my sources insist, is that the two singers will duet on BC Jean’s debut album once she gets her own recording deal. Right now, managers, publishers and A&R people from all over the industry are falling over themselves trying to sign BC Jean. They should be. She seems to be the real deal, a potential artist with a big career looming in front of her. It’s a shame that this is the way she had to find out about the record business.

BC Jean’s story is an old one that dates back to Elvis Presley and continues ‘til today. The larger issue, of course, is that performers who don’t write their own music get no royalty when their records are played on the radio. That’s why a Performance Royalty Act is being pushed in Congress right now, and why songwriters should back it. Artists wouldn’t be looking to muscle in on their business if they were paid appropriately. Beyonce simply falls into a category that also includes Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett as well as Sam Moore and Judy Collins, each of whom testified in front of Congress about the matter this year.

I've read stories about Beyone's father being a major douche. Some established producers have complained about having meetings w/ him and he treats them like minimum wage workers who should be thankful they're in the same room.

He and Beyone should learn to play instruments and write their own damn songs.

I have heard her dad is soley focused on her career and screw everything and everyone else. Guess that is good for her, but sucks for everyone else.

WWTDD isn't journalism, it's entertainment and commentary. What's missing from this story is the likely fact that big label singers probably buy songs all the time: their contribution is as performers and personalities, not artists. Commercially speaking, all creative enterprises are crapshoots, so if people can't come to terms, then the guy with the tighest contracts and the most lawyers wins. BC Jean probably should have known that before she recorded and produced songs with an overseas label.

Pop artists due this stuff all the time. Not just them though.

Led Zeppelin did this a lot and they're one of the greatest bands ever.

From what I've seen, Beyonce does write a lot of her stuff though. And while her dad may be a douche, she seems fairly down to Earth, but who knows.

As for her not being gorgeous (DaDa).............. I don't know what that dude is on, but it must be expensive.

true, Zeppelin also got sued and had to settle out of court on a few of their songs that they adapted, including Bring It On Home, The Lemon Song, and Whole Lotta Love.

they have changed their songwriting credits over the years to reflect that, particularly on their first two albums...

but they still got away with quite a bit of creative plagiarism.

Oh come on, she got caught trying to basically get a cool song for nothing and had to settle out of court to use it.

The BC Jean version is better, IMO, more emotion.

I did like the dude's parody though...he has a nice tone.
