If 2017 Westbrook (30-10-10 stat hog on underachieving team) was greater than or equal to 2017 Harden (29-11-8 on better efficiency on an overachieving real contender); and

2018 Harden (30-8-6, high efficiency on historically great team > 2017 Harden; and

    2019 Harden (36, streak, Wilt records, phenomenal revolutionary season > 2018 Harden;

    And 2019 Giannis is MVP and > 2019 Harden....THEN:

transitive property wise he's better than 2019 Wilt Crusher Harden, 2018 Best Player on Ultra Dominant Team Harden, 2017 Trip Dub Russ and the 2017 Da Real MVP Harden, a few years of peak old LeBron...etc.

A vote for Giannis is a vote against the foundation of reality.

To be fair, MVP criteria can't be based on past MVP winners. Westbrook winning it over Harden pretty much threw all precedence out the window.

    Slow start
    • Rockets have 2nd best record in NBA since Melo was benched after 10 games.
    • Harden is outscoring even MJ's season -- 37.4 ppg after first 10 games
    • Means Melo is to blame for Harden losing the MVP.
    • And by transitive property means Morey is to blame.
Everything else is a slow start ... derp

I'm firmly on the Harden camp but we should stop bringing up Westbrook. The Westbrook MVP was a mistake and shouldn't happen again. It's already widely accepted as such. Using that as an argument for Harden would be as though you're advocating for another mistake to be made even though Harden's case this year is completely legitimate.

Sorta hard when the Westbrook reference is really a reference on the voter, not the accomplishment.

But OP logic is solid. Giannis 2019 season is forgettable. If Giannis wins MVP, look for Harden to be the second winner for MVP at the NBPA Players' Awards.

The debate shouldn't be Harden vs. Giannis.

It should be Harden vs. Unanimous

Sadly the MVP winner is the one the media can make the coolest story about.

Just use hard numbers to shut the haters down:

It's literally impossible to go without criticism when he has that high of a ppg avg.
    1. He shoots too much! As if anyone else in the NBA could scale their usage in the same way and maintain their efficiency.
    2. If the shots attempted are much less than his points scored: I bet he shot a buttload of free throws for that! Harden draws free throws on 14.7% of his possessions (including jump shots, drives, and turnovers) while Giannis draws free throws 21.2% of the time.
    3. That kind of ball domination is not conducive to winning! In literally no other year where someone had a usage above 35% has someone been as efficient AND a contributor to winning as much Harden. Case in point:
    1986-87 Jordan: 37.1 ppg, 40.0 mpg, 27.8 FGA, 11.9 FTA, 38.3 USG%, 29.8 PER, 56.2 TS%, 16.9 win shares, .247 WS/48, team record 40-42
    2001-02 Iverson: 31.4 ppg, 43.7 mpg, 27.8 FGA, 9.8 FTA, 37.8 USG%, 21.9 PER, 48.9 TS%, 6.9 win shares, .126 WS/48, team record 43-39
    2005-06 Kobe: 35.4 ppg, 41.0 mpg, 27.2 FGA, 10.2 FTA, 38.7 USG%, 28.0 PER, 55.9 TS%, 15.3 win shares, .224 WS/48, team record 45-37
    2016-17 Westbrook: 31.6 ppg, 34.6 mpg, 24.0 FGA, 10.4 FTA, 41.7 USG%, 30.6 PER, 55.4 TS%, 13.1 win shares, .224 WS/48, team record 47-35
    2018-19 Harden: 36.4 ppg, 37.2 mpg, 24.8 FGA, 11.2 FTA, 40.7 USG%, 30.4 PER, 61.2 TS%, 14.8 win shares (on pace), .247 WS/48, team record 53-29 (on pace)

Those are some famous seasons by some great players. And Harden's season is the best out of all of them. Most efficient. Most winning-oriented. And just as necessary when you consider the 60+ games the 2nd/3rd/4th best players on his team lost due to injury.

gets even more interesting when you compare MJ's MVP '88 season (35ppg) to Harden....including team Wins and Seed...
Then Compare who MJ beat that year to Giannis, and tell me if Giannis would beat that guy's numbers, again including Wins/Seed.

then apply the transitive property per @SamFisher
