Should I find an airbnb place to stay in Ford Lauderdale and enjoy the beach there? Or go south to Miami where it's a little more expensive and find a place there?

I'm going solo. I've never been to that area. Any recommendations on things to do?

    It's about a 4-5 day vacation.

Definitely hit up Hollywood, FL which isn't too far from Ft. Lauderdale. They have a Casino resort there on an indian reserve with Hard Rock. (if that's your kind of thing)

I would suggest Miami if you are solo. Fort Lauderdale is nice, but more of a family destination or boating. With Miami you have the hotel bars which are fine for single travelers -- and Miami's scene revolves around hotels. The beaches are more crowded but comparable to Fort Lauderdale.

The center of the action is the SLS/Delano/Ritz Carlton area, but if you can't chin up to those prices ($500/night) there are more affordable hotels nearby. Places I go include Baoli, Edition, Mr Chow, the bar at the Setai, and Jose Andres at SLS.

Try the app UrbanDaddy for recommendations for every conceivable scenario. Shower me with rep if you find the app useful.

The Ft. Lauderdale beach area is a bit more limited on bars/restaurants/shopping w/in walking distance. It's a short drive to the Las Olas blvd strip and then a little further into the downtown bars/clubs clustered area which is open container at night. But it leans towards an older crowd and more locals.

But for a single person vacationing in the area you should just go to South Beach. It's maybe 5-10x bigger area for walking and a much better variety. Needless to say the amount of restaurants, bars, shops, etc. And you can go from dive bars to upscale in a single block.

Ft. Lauderdale seems to be for people who are there for a few hours (or local), but in South Beach there will be enough to wander around night and day with variety. It's also just way more lively. FYI, I grew up in South Florida.

Yes you can, but Miami prices raise up in March.

Stay around South Beach. 3 Streets you need to know.

Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue and Washington

Will you have access to a car? If so, you can stay a bit farther from the hip places in Miami. Agreed with what some people are saying, Ft. Lauderdale is more family oriented. Single crowds will be in Miami. Just don't go too south, well unless you like that sort of thing ;)

I like to stay a the Trump Beach resort in Sunny Isle. It's not too far from FLL airport. It has great beach service and is centrally located so that if you had access to a car(or even just use Uber or cabs), you can get to the Hard Rock Seminole for gambling, and then go down to South Beach for partying. There is also a good Mediterranean/Italian place right across the street(I think it's called La Terrazza). It's also centrally located to the various "gentlemen's" clubs if you are are into that sort of thing.

Rather than going vacation, spend the time cultivating a friendship.

I have only been once but I really liked Miami. Cool vibe.

Not to derail thread but how is Destin guys? I'm considering road tripping since it's only 9 hours away from Houston (and goes through NO), also thinking of doing a camp at the beach thing on a campground or something.

I'm going to Destin this summer, haven't previously been though. Also, its quicker to bypass NO... Not by much though.

We've been meaning to make a trip over to Destin.

This year though, we're going to Miami to hop on a cruise to the Bahamas etc....

We go every summer. My thoughts, Destin itself is overcrowded and I prefer a bit east from Mirimar and out further. That area is also full of families, not a great club/bar scene.

Beaches are great (snow white sand), fishing charters are great, good options for eating from high end to regular chains including Whataburger LOL!!! Also have grocery stores for shopping if you're cooking yourself.

Have really good museums including the Naval Museum in Fort Walton. Renting a boat and anchoring at Crab Island is alot of fun but it can get crowded.

I wouldn't bypass NO. Every year we go we make it a way point and stay at least one night in NOLA. It makes the drive shorter and we have tons of fun in NOLA. It's like a mini-bonus trip. Could sorta do the same with the Lake Charles casinos if that's your thing.
