Listening to Metallica's Enter Sandman on the radio yesterday just confirmed to me that it is the best heavy metal song ever. And I'm not even a Metallica fan.

There's really no discussion to be had here. Enter Sandman it is.

    Say your prayers little one
    don't forget, my son
    to include everyone

    tuck you in, warm within
    keep you free from sin
    till the sandman he comes

    sleep with one eye open
    gripping your pillow tight

    exit light
    enter night
    take my hand
    off to never never land

    something's wrong, shut the light
    heavy thoughts tonight
and they aren't of snow white

dreams of war, dreams of liars
    dreams of dragon's fire

and of things that will bite

    sleep with one eye open
    gripping your pillow tight

    exit light
    enter night
    take my hand
    off to never never land

now I lay me down to sleep
pray the lord my soul to keep
if I die before I wake
pray the lord my soul to take

hush little baby, don't say a word
and never mind that noise you heard
it's just the beast under your bed,
in your closet, in your head

    exit light
    enter night
    grain of sand

    exit light
    enter night
    take my hand
we're off to never never land

So ripping off a line from a prayer, pairing it with a horrible guitar line and a lazy drum beat makes the best heavy metal song ever?

let metallica die the horrible death those pu**ies deserve.

Some also call it the Billy Wagner theme.

I'd have to go with Suicide Solution by Randy Rho...er, Ozzy Osbourne.

It's dark (obviously), it has a great guitar riff to start the song, great middle section with Randy wailing as only he can do, and of course a great history with those kids killing themselves after hearing 'the devil' tell them to in the middle part.

I don't know if it is considered the "best", but I have always liked "Snowblind" by Black Sabbath - probably my favorite heavy metal song ever, although there are several songs on Judas Priest's "Screaming for Vengeance" that challenge it such as "You've Got Another Thing Comin'", "Devil's Child", and "Electric Eye".

HAMMERED SMASHED FACE- BY CANIBAL CORPSE

    There's something inside me
    It's, it's coming out
    I feel like killing you
Let loose the anger, held back too long
    My blood runs cold

Through my anatomy, dwells another being
Rooted in my cortex, a servant to its bidding

    Brutality now becomes my appetite
Violence is now a way of life
The sledge my tool to torture
As it pounds down on your forehead
    Eyes bulging from their sockets
With every swing of my mallet
I smash your ****ing head in, until brains seep in
through the cracks, blood does na
    distorted beauty, catastrophe
Steaming slop, splattered all over me

Lifeless body, slouching dead lecherous abcess, where you once had a head

Avoiding the prophecy of my new found lust
You will never live again, soon your life will end
I'll see you die at my feet, eternally I smash your face
facial bones collapse as I crack your skull in half

    Crushing, cranial, contents

Draining the snot, I rip out the eyes
Squeezing them in my hands nerves are incised
Peeling the flesh off the bottom of my weapon
    Involuntarily pulpifying facial regions

    Suffer, and then you die

    Torture, pulverized

At one with my sixth sense, I feel free
To kill as I please, no one can stop me

Created to kill, the carnage continues
    Violently reshaping human facial tissue

    Brutality becomes my appetite
Violence is now a way of life
The sledge my tool to torture
As it pounds down on your forehead

Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden
    South of Heaven - Slayer
    Whiplash - Metallica

What makes a heavy metal song great?

I like "Bark at the Moon" by Ozzy alot, because it's such a blazing song.

"Ace of Spades" by Motorhead is really more like punk, but since they consider themselves metal, I'll give the song a nod here as well.

"Creeping Death" by Metallica is one massive riff after another and even has a "gang chant" vocal. Actually, pretty much all of Ride the Lightning is great metal (although "Escape" is kinda weak).

"Symptom of the Universe" by Black Sabbath is often considered the heaviest (and most copied) riff ever. I still prefer "Sweet Leaf" however.
