Think Matrix had more to say than pulp fiction. And it did it from the opening sequence, "wake up". Though provoking film on several levels. I'd go with the Matrix over goodfellas and pulp fiction.
The late 1990s had some great movies. American Beauty, The Matrix, Fight Club, and The Big Lebowski were all late 1990s.
Can I write-in Shawshank Redemption for each year? It didn't come out until 94...but it was still the best movie of 1992.
Some memorable heavy-hitters yet to be mentioned... Fargo Unforgiven The Usual Suspects The Silence of the Lambs Being John Malkovich Miller's Crossing Schindler's List Trainspotting Reservoir Dogs Boogie Nights Rushmore Unquestionably, the greatest American film of the 90s is Goodfellas.
We're doing 1998 this afternoon so you'll definitely want to check it out. I'll post the link once it goes live.
GoodFellas won 1990. Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Rushmore (1998) are up this week so you need to get over and vote!
The Matrix won 1999 last week and is shaping up to be a real contender for best of the decade. It survived a tough bracket and annihilated Toy Story 2 in the finals. The Big Lebowski (1998) is up this afternoon so check it out and VOTE!
The FIRST ROUND match-ups for 1991 are now live - all 8 polls are threaded in this tweet: Voting is open for four hours. And I am threatening violence if you DON'T vote for Defending Your Life. (Just kidding!) (Not really!) (I'm TOTALLY joking. ) (I'm not.)
Of the stuff mentioned, definitely this, with apologies to The Matrix and Fight Club. Terminator 2 is the GOAT action movie in my book. That say, I gotta give a shout-out to A Few Good Men. I could pretty much be happy watching that movie on loop, and am still mystified as to why the already-good critical reception wasn't better.
