The Red Sox also continue to talk with the Dodgers and Athletics about a possible three-way deal involving David Wells, who would go to L.A., while the Sox would facilitate the return of Jay Payton to Boston. -- Boston Globe

Shortly after hearing from Miguel Tejada on Saturday that he no longer wants to be dealt, Orioles vice president Jim Duquette returned to his phone. That's not to say, however, that the Orioles won't listen to Tejada offers if another club is seriously interested. Intriguing names mentioned included Astros Roy Oswalt and Brad Lidge, Phillie Bobby Abreu and Tiger Carlos Guillen. -- Baltimore Sun

While Yankees people do believe Manny Ramirez will remain in Boston (of course, they'd like him out of there), some AL executives could envision the Orioles trading Miguel Tejada. "[Peter] Angelos is just dumb enough to do it," one competing exec said. -- Newsday

Jeromy Burnitz's agent killed the $12 million deal offered by the Orioles because the language presented by owner Peter Angelos gave the team too much latitude for killing the deal after other teams interested in Burnitz had signed other players. "That's how Peter plays general manager," said Frank Wren, who was the Orioles' GM in 1999 and was fired after the season. "He uses medical reasons to kill or change a deal if he doesn't like it." -- New York Times

The Cubs could trade center fielder Corey Patterson as soon as today, most likely to the Baltimore Orioles or a National League team that has entered into the negotiations. The Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox appear to be long shots to get involved again at the 11th hour, although they've talked to the Cubs about Patterson. -- Chicago Sun-Times

The Nationals may be trying to trade recently acquired second baseman Alfonso Soriano, in whom the Cubs had interest when he was with Texas. The Cubs, though, would have to include at least one pitcher along with Corey Patterson in such a deal, and Jerome Williams appears expendable. -- Chicago Tribune

The Mets' reluctance to surrender Aaron Heilman is what cost them Danys Baez. Baez's unwillingness to sign an extension, knowing that he wouldn't be a closer with the Mets, didn't help, either. Baez wants to hit the free-agent market next winter as a closer, not lock himself up as a setup man. -- Newsday

Jeff Weaver will pitch for a team other than the Dodgers after a Sunday night deadline passed without the right-hander coming to agreement with his team of the last two seasons. Weaver sought a contract somewhere between the deals struck by Jarrod Washburn and Kevin Millwood, but during the last week told the Dodgers he would accept a three-year deal with an option for a fourth year based on performance. -- Los Angeles Times

There's been speculation Kirk Gibson would get one of the Dodgers' coaching jobs, and that he'd even be interviewed to manage them, but the latter didn't happen and the former hasn't yet -- although the Dodgers haven't named their entire staff. -- Detroit News

It's quite possible Chris Reitsma, who avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $2.75 million contract Friday, could end up back in the closer role he held briefly last season. The Braves still hope, however, to trade for a closer or have one of their other relievers show he's ready for the job. -- Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Reds infielder Ryan Freel was arrested early Sunday in Tampa, Fla., and charged with one count of disorderly intoxication, according to a booking report from the Hillsborough County jail. It is the second time Freel has been arrested in less than a year. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after Opening Day April 4. -- Cincinnati Enquirer

Roy O???? i cant even think the astros would even think about trading him. included with lidge??? yea right.....

And my sunshine rose colored Homer ass would be leading the charge. Honestly, I trade Roy Oswalt for one person in MLB. Pujols. That's it. And that'd be tough.

The Orioles also inquired about Houston's Roy Oswalt...and were rejected."

We offered Lidge/Backe/AE, they asked for Roy, Tim laughed. All the while the masses were screaming that TP was incompetent, lazy ("get off your ass and do something"), clueless, etc, and pretty much calling for him to be run out of town...

Well good job TP. This offseason didnt really have very many marquee sluggers that we could get so there really wasn't much that he could do.

So do ya'll think the Stros are through for the offseason. I really don't see any other big bats out there for the taking. All the big names are too costly as far as trade wise. I think we're set.

Preston Wilson is the upgrade/insurance policy the offense needed if healthy. Miller adds depth to the pen. The only thing left to get is a minor FA gamble pitcher to compete for the 4th/5th starter spot in ST imho.

In no way does this prove he is not incompetent. It does prove that he is not braindead, however. That's a positive.

Yep. We definitely need someone to fill the gaping hole in our rotation after the Stros ditched the best pitcher in the game. Thanks Drayton and Timmy!

Whoa. There are a few significant things in that article.

    1. We offered Lidge/Everett/Taveras or Lane. No Backe -- which meant our rotation would have been untouched.

    2. McClane was willing to have a $100 million payroll with Tejada and assuming Clemens comes back.

    3. The sticking point for us really was Tejada's ability to demand a trade after a year.

    4. Tejada let the Phillies know that, if they put him at 3rd, he'd demand a trade.

Man, I hope they revisit this deal. Everett obviously is replaced by Tejada; Taveras/Lane is replaced by Wilson; and hopefully Qualls/Wheeler give you a little bit of what you lose with Lidge.

Only thing is the O's now have Corey Patterson, so they probably don't need Taveras anymore.

But you'd have a lineup of:

    Taveras
    Biggio
    Berkman
    Tejada
    Ensberg
    Wilson
Bagwell (or Burke if Bagwell can't come back)
    Ausmus

Here's the article in its entirety:

O's should still listen to offers for Tejada

Either Miguel Tejada had a genuine change of heart about the Orioles, or he flat-out blinked.

The National League champion Astros were the team closest to landing Tejada, FOXSports.com has learned, offering closer Brad Lidge, shortstop Adam Everett and either outfielder Jason Lane or Willy Taveras.

The Phillies also wanted Tejada, intending to move him from shortstop to third base. The Tigers, too, were in the mix, representing little of an improvement, if any, over the Orioles — the team Tejada was trying to flee.

Perhaps Tejada sensed that he wasn't going to land with the Red Sox, seemingly his first choice, or the Cubs, possibly his second.

Perhaps, lacking no-trade protection, he wanted to regain a measure of control, and the only way to do that was by saying he would remain with the Orioles.

Well, that's no longer a sure thing.

The Orioles aren't looking to trade Tejada, but they're also in no position to dismiss interest in a player who remains at least somewhat disgruntled. The Astros' proposal intrigued them, and who's to say the Orioles won't revisit those discussions and others?

Everett, a gifted defender, would have been another Mark Belanger at short. Lane could have helped replace Tejada's offense, or Taveras would have filled the Orioles' void in center field, a position the team addressed Monday by acquiring the Cubs' Corey Patterson.

Lidge, one of the game's top closers, was the central figure from the Orioles' perspective, either as the replacement for departed free agent B.J. Ryan — or as a trade chip who could have helped the club address its biggest need, starting pitching.

Sources with knowledge of the negotiations say the Orioles and Astros could have agreed on the players in the deal with little difficulty. The Astros were concerned that Tejada would invoke his right to demand a trade at the end of next season as a player dealt in the middle of a multi-year contract. They likely would have asked Tejada to waive that right, a potential sticking point. The deal also would have required the approval of Orioles owner Peter Angelos, a demanding negotiator.

Astros owner Drayton McLane, however, evidently was prepared to absorb most or all of the $48 million remaining over the final four years of Tejada's contract while parting with three low-cost players who played significant roles in the Astros' World Series run. Barring further moves, the Astros' payroll might have soared past $100 million, assuming that right-hander Roger Clemens returned to the club.

Given Tejada's desire to play for a winner, he likely would have been satisfied by a trade to Houston — Clemens, Roy Oswalt and Andy Pettitte are just slightly more accomplished than the Orioles' Rodrigo Lopez, Daniel Cabrera and Erik Bedard. But Tejada didn't necessarily know he was going to the Astros. Perhaps he grew anxious when the Orioles' talks with the Red Sox and Cubs stalled, creating openings for other suitors.

One possibility clearly disturbed him: Through his agents, Tejada signaled to the Phillies that he would have played third base for only one season, then exercised his right to demand a trade. For that, the Phillies would have parted with right fielder Bobby Abreu? Didn't make sense.

In the end, Tejada chose the familiar over the unfamiliar, even though the familiar is a franchise that has had eight straight losing seasons — including six straight before he signed his six-year, $72 million contract with the Orioles after the 2003 season.

Tejada should have known what he was getting into when he sold himself not to the most competitive team but to the highest bidder. He may simply be biding time with his latest reversal. Judging from his comments to Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe during an interview in the Dominican Republic, Tejada still doesn't sound content.

Tejada told Edes he changed his mind because of his daughter, Alexis, 6, who had told him that she liked living in Baltimore. He also indicated that he had been bothered by criticism of his trade request both in the U.S. and Dominican Republic. But he also made it clear that he was not happy with the Orioles' direction, saying he was "really angry" that the team had not made significant off-season improvements.

Well, he can't have it both ways. If Tejada wanted out, he could have gotten out. Perhaps, as he told Edes, he merely heeded the advice of his wife, who told him, "Wait for God to give you the opportunity to win. Don't look for it. Let God decide when you're going to win."

Or perhaps, with the trade talks moving toward unknown, potentially undesirable outcomes, Tejada simply lost his nerve.

The Astros have a solid rotation, without Roger. I'm talking about signing a guy to compete for the 4th/5th spot in the spring, not someone guaranteed a spot. Oswalt-Pettitte-Backe is still as strong a front two and one of the better 1-3's in the league. Not to mention Zeke and Wandy both showed flashes of brilliance in the 2nd half, and that doesn't include talents like Hirsh, Nieve, or Buchholz. I would think out of those 5 guys that one or two would step up and be a competent 4th starter. Then, early on, you can skip your 5th starter as often as necessary, and it's not a major position of importance.

That doesn't even account for the strong possibility that Roger returns in May. He hasn't even cleared out his locker yet. I would wager if the Astros pitchers/hitters can stay healthy(knock on wood) the pitching will be good enough to easily be a playoff contender with the addition of the one bat the lineup the offense sorely lacked last season with Bagwell's injury.

If the Baltimore GM really asked for Roy Oswalt in trade for Tejada, I hope Tim farted at them over the phone.
