Astros showing interest in Cuban SS Jose Israel Garcia

Well... the Luis Robert pursuit didn't pan out, but the Astros are in on another young, talented Cuban.

Free agent Cuban shortstop Jose Israel Garcia, 19, is showcasing for teams in Mexico this week, with the Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres among teams showing early interest.

Garcia, a slick-fielding infielder who’s been described a “a Manny Machado type with less power,” is expected to sign in the next few weeks. MLB recently declared him a free agent.

Garcia, a superior defender, is expected to get a multi-million dollar deal, though he is not seen as being in the category of mega talent Luis Robert, who just signed with the White Sox for something close to $27 million, as FanRag Sports first reported, though the final figure hasn’t been made public yet. The Cardinals, Braves and White Sox are among other teams who could have interest in Garcia.

Thank you for the spoiler and not making me click on a Jon Heyman link.

I missed the Robert signing last weekend. I knew we weren't going to sign him, but he sure would have looked nice here, given that Tucker is our only real elite hitting prospect as of now. Would have made a trade involving him less painful. But it's not my money.
