Long Island Ducks? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/07/george-springer-may-sign-with-long-island-ducks.html Is there anything to be happy about this season?
Please, no. The last thing this utterly pathetic organization needs is to lose a supremely talented 5-tool prospect...
I really hope we sign this guy. I am interested to see how he turns out. I agree, this is just a bluff to get the Astros to shell out more money.
He is only a junior, so he could go back to college if he wanted. Of course he immediately came out and said he would sign as soon as he was drafted, which may be why his agent is looking for an additional negotiating ploy.
Cory Spangenberg, who was the 10th overall pick by San Diego, is currently the only person in the top 15 to sign. His bonus was $1.86 million. Spangenberg is now at low-A Fort Wayne after hitting .384/.545/.535 with a homer, 20 RBI, and 10 steals in 14 tries (31 BB, 15 K ) in 25 games at short-season Eugene. He's struggling a bit in low-A, as he's at .143/.217/.167 with 2 RBI in 11 games.
This. As was stated, 1 of the top 15 have signed, his father already said that returning to UConn is out of the question, the Astros were up-front after they drafted him that they weren't in a hurry to sign him. Patience.
I think that was also the entire reason San Diego took him this high. They had multiple picks in the round, so they wanted to make sure they took one signable hitter that they could get in the system immediately. As far as Springer goes, I think this is a negotiating ploy. Too much bad has come from the Astros previous unwillingness to pay their draftees for them to let Springer get away. Their minor league system has suffered for years and they took a lot of heat in the press for it. They'll get a deal done.
