Well, whatever you call it Drayton I hope you let the baseball people figure it out. http://www.twithear.com/playaudio.p...Q5LFOdPJNXF4YEjlq8WZv9bqNHzsynMfOCyrZs7//bl01
I agree with Drayton. Saving $13 mil by trading Roy and Lance and then turning around and spending $29mil on Brett Meyers is not rebuilding.
Drayton can call it whatever he wants, its rebuilding. They should try to move Lyon this month since I am sure he will pass through waviers and could net a decent prospect, a 2 yr 10 million dollar deal is what he was going to get this offseason anyway. This offseason they NEED to move Wandy and make EVERY effort to move Lee. If Wandy continues to pitch well then he could nab a nice prospect or two. Lee will be much harder but even if uncle D has eat half of that contract he has to get moved or we might be stuck with him till 2013. You could wait till the deadline next year but your options could be limited at best by then if he has another awful season.
Middle relievers don't get $5MM/yr deals. Lyon is pretty much unmovable due to his ridiculous contract.
HOLY FOCKING *****!!!!Brett meyers got $29MM..WTF!!! spending $15MM to save $13MM, and getting scrubs thrown in, genius... F'N Drayton is a douche...
The Phillies were close to signing Lyon for, what I believe, a 2 yr 10 million dollar deal this offseason before Wade gave him the 3rd year and Lyon had no choice but to sign.
It could be worse.....we could be the Cubbies. At least we're moving guys out..... Cubs are stuck with so many contracts that no one wants a part of....trouble some players etc. ...oh...and they suck.
2011 - $7 mil 2012 - $11 mil $3 mil buyout -or- 2013 - $10 mil So $21 mil over 2 years or $28 mil over 3 years. Performance incentives could add another $1.5 mil.
The intent was that he would close. This year they are paying Lyon and Lindstrom around 5.9 million combined which isn't bad for a setup/closer combination. The problem will be next year because Lindstrom will demand a higher arbitration number since he will request closer money. If Lyon was the closer and Lindstrom the set up guy, they would be paying a very reasonable amount through the length of Lyon's contract.
You consider the guy who was 2nd in rookie of the year voting last year and one of the top prospects in all of baseball (currently the starting first baseman) scrubs?
I believe he's fuming because he doesn't recognize any of the names in the deal, despite being a minor league genius. Drayton is a douche because he didn't trade Oswalt for Strasburg -- why can't you see that?!
Other than Lee, nothing really ugly as of now. http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tpVEEt0xJYL5tNiWZBplUDg&output=html
Lyon's is kind of ugly. I like the Myers deal. Anyone think we are bringing Roy back in 2012. Oswalt-Happ-Myers-Wandy-Lyles. That could potentially be a playoff team.
And Berkman as a pinch hitter. Roy's not coming back though...he wanted his option picked up only to later relent...so if he decides to keep playing after his contract is up (which he's never said he'd definitely do), he'll probably look to get paid. Plus he wants to be on a sure-fire winner...even if the Astros are competing maybe for the division in '12, they'll still be a ways from a true contender.
Rookie of the year voting is highly variable year to year. Some years there's lots of strong contenders, other years theres not. I don't think Happ would be nearly as high this year. For example, Willy Taveras was 2nd in the NL ROY voting in '05 but no one ever considered him a top prospect. It's just not that indicative of the rest of a players career. Chris Johnson is having a hell of a season thus far and in a weak rookie class year, might have garnered a few ROY votes. But no one thinks he'll keep it up and thus far he hasn't shown that much power. Happ stills projects like a 3-4 pitcher because his stuff isn't dominant. As for Brett Wallace, being drafted high and hitting well in AAA put him at the top of prospect lists but people are discovering his ceiling isn't very high. Especially if he sticks at 1B, his bat there is only slightly above average. If we got Dominic Brown or Jesus Montero, that'd be something to write home about.
